AUSTIN, Texas - Texas took advantage of five Oklahoma State errors to defeat the Cowboys 8-4 in baseball action Friday night at Disch-Falk stadium.
Both teams traded unearned runs in the second inning, OSU's coming off a RBI double by Rob Watson, while Texas scored off a RBI single by Matt Rosenberg.
Carl?s Gautreaux blasted a RBI double scoring Chad Hemphill and giving the Pokes a 2-1 lead in the third. The Longhorns responded with two runs in their half of the inning off of RBI singles by Tommy Nicholson and Ben Emond to take a 3-2 lead.
OSU tied the score at 3-3 in the fourth when Ront? Langs scored on a RBI double by Nebasett Brown. Texas regained the lead in the bottom of the inning off a RBI single by Sam Anderson and added another in the fifth when Tommy Nicholson scored on an error by catcher Ryan Budde to take a 5-3 lead.
Gautreaux came back with an RBI triple in the seventh to cut the lead to 5-4 before the Longhorns once again responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning extending the lead to 7-4.
Texas starter D.J. Jones moved to 8-2 with the win while Matt Smith dropped to 2-4 with the loss. Reliever Charlie Thames pitched the final 2.1 innings to pick up his ninth save of the year.
Texas moved to 24-5 overall and 10-2 in the Big 12 while the Oklahoma State dropped to 14-10 and 5-5 in conference play.
Both teams will be back in action Saturday at 2 p.m. in the second game of the series. Righthander Frank Bludau will be on the mound for OSU while Beau Hale will pitch for the Longhorns.
