CANYON, Texas - Oklahoma State's Cowgirl equestrian team won two out of three hunt seat shows this weekend at the West Texas A&M Hunt Seat Show to win high point honors in the region.
Oklahoma State won the Friday afternoon show and the second show on Saturday to score 103 team points on the weekend, just one point ahead of Texas A&M. The Cowgirls finished second behind Texas A&M in the Saturday morning show.
With the team points from this weekend, the Cowgirls won first place in the region with 279 points for 10 shows. By winning the Zone 7, Region 2 points competition, Oklahoma State will automatically qualify for the Zone 7 Show, where they will compete against Region 1 winner Colorado State. The zone show will be held April 1 in Canyon, Texas, and the winner will advance to the national show May 12-14 in Atlanta, Ga.
"This was the most important show of the year," assistant coach Suzanne Flaig said. "We're thrilled that we could best an established hunt seat team (Texas A&M) in our first season."
Several Cowgirls won first place in their class over the weekend. In the first show, Kristen Thomas earned high point rider honors, as well as placing first in her class. Audrey Buck was the reserve high point rider for the show. Amber Burnett, Summer DeHart, Stephanie Hefley, Jennifer Baughman, and Trista Armstrong also added first place finishes for the Cowgirls.
In the second show, Allysa Allen earned reserve high point rider honors. Burnett, Nancy Perlich, Armstrong, and Amy Eastty also received first place recognition in their classes.
In the final show of the weekend, Audrey Buck was the high point rider for the show, winning both her fences and flat classes. Sheila Dohmann, Hefley, Allen, and Burnett also finished first in their respective classes for the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls will return home March 4 for the Region 2 championships, which will be held at the Animal Science Arena.
