Men's Basketball Loses Close One To Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan. - Terrell Benton scored a crucial basket with 37 seconds left and Wichita State hung on to stun Oklahoma State 61-59 Wednesday night
Benton's basket gave Wichita State (4-1) a 60-57 lead. Oklahoma State (3-1) had two shots at sending the game into overtime, but a 10-footer by Fredrik Jonzen missed with three seconds left and then a short follow shot from the baseline by Maurice Baker missed as time ran out.
After Benton's score, Victor Williams scored on a driving layout with 21 seconds left to cut the Shockers' lead to 60-59. Wichita State's Duke Tshomba then hit one-of-two free throws at the 14-second mark to set the stage for the Cowboys' final two shots.
Wichita State had taken a 53-50 lead when Tshomba hit a 3-point shot with 4:35 left. Benton then hit another 3-point basket a minute later to put the Shockers up by six.
Benton scored 16 of his game-best 23 points in the second half.
It was an evenly played game in the first half until Oklahoma State scored seven unanswered points in the final two minutes to take a 29-19 lead at halftime.
Andre Williams began that surge with a jarring dunk off a missed shot with 1:29 left. Then, after a 3-point basket by Baker, Melvin Sanders came up with a steal and scored underneath.
O.J. Robinson added 11 points for Wichita State.
Baker led the Cowboys with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
