Oklahoma State Post-Game Quotes

OSU Coach Eddie Sutton
"I thought our defense, overall, was terrific. I thought we really took them
out of their offense early. A lot of times you may miss shots, but sometimes
there is a reason for that. I thought Victor (Williams), again tonight like
he did the other night, really did a good job on their point guard in
putting so much pressure on him that it was hard for them to get into their
offense. We got a little lax in the last eight to ten minutes, but that will
happen when you have a big lead."
On Fredrik Jonzen
"Fredrik (Jonzen) played like he did the last seven or eight games last
season. He played more like we had anticipated him playing. I don't think he
is going to score that many points or have a double-double every night, but
I thought that he really did a nice job."
On Maurice Baker
"(Maurice) Baker didn't look to score, but I thought he really ran the
ballclub well and was able to dish the ball off. He is really an outstanding
rebounder for a guard. He has the opportunity to get a lot of rebounds."
Oklahoma State Players
Guard Victor Williams
"Coach really wanted us to pick up the intensity, and I think that's what we
did."
Forward Fredrik Jonzen
"I thought we came out and played really good defense. It's a great thing
to hold the opponent like we did there in the first half. But then we let
them come back in the second half and have some easy points. That's the way
that we have to play every night. If we can have that effort every night
then we're going to be a very good defensive team.
"Ever since school was out, we've been having two a days and we've been having shooting practices here in Gallagher. We're starting to get used to our home court. Now we're going to have a three day break for Christmas, to see our families. I think that is great too, to get a little break. Then we have to come back and practice hard. During Christmas break, you can just focus on basketball because you don't have school or anything. Most people leave town, so it's pretty much just us here. I think that's a great time to improve."
Melvin Sanders
On getting his shooting touch back
"It's about time I got back my touch. I was in a three-game slump, and I was
just working on my shot all week, concentrating on shooting and taking my
time. I think I got it back.
On the team controlling the entire game
"It's good to get one of these types of games in going into the break. It
allows us to go home for Christmas feeling good about ourselves with a 7-1
record, it's a good feeling."
Jack Marlow
On his performance tonight
"I feel good, all of the hardwork in practice paid off tonight."
On the impact of a game like tonight
"It feels great. Tonight's game gives us a big confidence boost, it gets us
on a roll and helps build up some momentum that I hope we carry on into the
rest of the season."
On areas of his game he needs to work on
"Yeah, I need to plant my feet more and get some charges called and I
probably need to rebound more."
Lamar Coach Mike Deane
"We have a very young basketball team, and this is a learning experience.
It's unfortunate that the game turned out like this, but when it does you
just throw it away. We haven't played well in the last four games, with the
exception of McNeese (State). Teams get more film on you, and we're going to
have to come up with some new things to get guys free and change our offense
a little bit, so we're ready to go when we play Louisiana. They're (Oklahoma
State) better than us at every position, including their substitutes, and
they played like it."
On Lewis Arline
"Unless he gets some help, and we get a little more competitiveness out of
our other big guys, we're going to struggle. Hopefully we can get some of
those things done, and we can change the chemistry that exists right now. We
need guys to be a little more upbeat, and maybe a chance to get home will be
good for them."
On the game plan
"They're a very talented team. They don't shoot the ball particularly well
from the outside, but we knew that Fredrik Jonzen can really shoot. We said
we weren't going to allow him to shoot without putting it on the floor. He
must have gotten eight wide open shots without putting it on the floor."
