OMAHA, Neb. -- Oklahoma State's women's tennis team completed a successful run at the ITA Central Regional this weekend in Omaha, Neb, placing three players in the singles quarterfinals and one team in the doubles semifinals.
"The girls had an excellent week and I am very proud of their performance," head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski said. "They came out and had success against some tough competition."
In the singles bracket, fifth-seeded Maria Galoustova-Phillips reeled off five consecutive victories, including an upset of the event's No. 3 seed, en route to capturing a spot in the finals. The senior's run was halted in the championship match by Weber State's Lenka Zacharova, who secured the title with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph.
Linda Faltynkova upended the tournament's top seed, Petra Sedlmajerova of Kansas State, on her way to a berth in the semifinals, where she fell to Galoustova-Phillips in three sets 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.
Freshman Katarzyna Kolodynska dropped a pair of seeded players, second-seeded Natalia Alekhova of New Mexico and 15th-seeded Bianca Posada of Tulsa, en route to her appearance in the quarterfinals. Kolodynksa, who battled through qualifying to reach the main draw, won five straight contests before falling to the tournament's eventual champion, Zacharova, in the quarters.
In doubles action, OSU's nationally-ranked duo of Galoustova-Phillips and Ashleigh Dolman entered play as the event's top seed and defending champion. The tandem fell just short of a repeat performance however, dropping an 8-6 decision to fourth-seeded Brooke Ferney and Jodi Richardson of BYU in the semifinals.
