STILLWATER, Okla. - Wal-Mart Supercenter and Oklahoma Blood Institute are working together to save the lives of Oklahomans in need of blood transfusions. They will host a community-wide blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21 at the Supercenter located at 111 N. Perkins.
This drive coincides with OBI's Bedlam Blood Drive competition in which donors get to vote for their favorite team, receive their choice of OSU or OU donor T-shirt, and a chance to enter a drawing for prizes including a game ball. Free checks of cholesterol as well as a mini-health check will be given. Written cholesterol test results are mailed to donors following the donation. OBI also offers men a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test to screen for prostate cancer at a nominal fee of $15 for donors and $20 for those unable to give.
Those unable to attend the Wal-Mart drive but interested in participating in the Bedlam festivities can donate at any OBI center or mobile drive site between now and Saturday, November 25. The timing of this drive is especially important, as there will be a greater need for blood donations and fewer donors giving blood over the Thanksgiving holiday. A regional, not-for-profit blood center, Oklahoma Blood Institute maintains blood centers in Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Ada, Ardmore, Enid, Lawton, and Ponca City. OBI is responsible for providing the blood supply to over 70 hospitals in 47 counties across Oklahoma. For more information or to schedule an appointment time, contact Elizabeth Smith at OBI at (405) 297-5562. Walk-ins are welcome and the community's support is greatly appreciated.
