KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Oklahoma State's softball team won two more games Sunday afternoon here at the KC Invitational, defeating Central Missouri State, 5-0, before finishing off the host-school UMKC, 3-0, to win the team championship.
The two wins improved OSU's fall record to a perfect 19-0, the best fall season in the history of Cowgirl softball. The last time an OSU squad went undefeated was in 1992, when the team finished 13-0 and later went on to the Women's College World Series in the spring.
In the first game, freshman hurler Tiffany Paper improved her fall record to 8-0 with a one-hit shutout of Central Missouri. She also struck out 10 in the victory. Offensively, junior Teresa Ritchie went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, while freshman Jade Lindly and senior Amanda Hayes each had RBI singles.
In game two, the Cowgirls scored two in the top of the first en route to a 3-0 win. Sophomore ace Lauren Bay threw five innings of shutout ball, and assisted herself to the win with two RBI singles. Hayes scored the first run on a double steal with Jenny Kipp. Bay combined with freshman Kara Wentworth for the one-hit shutout. Wentworth faced the minimum in two innings of relief, striking out two for her first save of the season.
The OSU pitching staff finished the fall with 11 shutouts and a 0.63 ERA. The Cowgirls will open spring action on Feb. 9 as the Cowgirls travel to Arlington, Texas, to compete in the UTA Intercollegiate Tournament.
