STILLWATER, Okla. - In dominating fashion, Oklahoma State's fourth-ranked wrestling team overwhelmed the 16th-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils 39-0 in front of 2,453 fans in Gallagher Iba Arena tonight.
Head coach John Smith moved into a tie for fourth place with Joe Seay on the OSU all-time coaching victories list with 114, while his Cowboys moved to 5-1-1 on the season. Older brother Lee Roy Smith's 16th-ranked Sun Devils fell to 3-3 on the season.
In the 165-pound match, the third time wasn't the charm for ASU's No. 2 Steve Blackford, who had defeated OSU's Ty Wilcox twice earlier this season. Wilcox reversed Blackford with :48 seconds remaining in the second period to take a 5-0 lead. With a 5-1 lead in the third period, Wilcox was reversed by Blackford with :29 seconds remaining, but Wilcox held on for an impressive 5-3 win.
At 141, OSU's No. 3-ranked Jamill Kelly started slowly but used a reversal with 1:44 remaining in the third period to take control of the match. He added a takedown for the 6-4 decision.
Reggie Wright won by forfeit at 149 pounds, increasing the Cowboy lead to 17-0.
Billy Gabel, in his second start as a Cowboy, excited the crowd by nearly pinning Arizona State's Curtis Owen twice. When it was all over Gabel left the mat with a 9-2 decision.
Coming out of redshirt, Daniel Cormier showed why he earned the start at 184 pounds. Showing an aggressive style, Cormier pinned ASU's Will McCleve in 4:26.
With the match well in hand, Mark Munoz major decisioned Erik Gladish, 16-6, at 197 pounds. Dave Anderton then decisioned Randy Leydecker 8-5.
