STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's men's cross country team opens the 1999 season this Saturday trying to repeat as the champion of the Wichita Gold Classic in Augusta, Kan.
The Gold Classic is the first of seven meets for the Cowboys this year. OSU has won the meet the past five times.
"We consider this a getting-started meet," OSU coach Dick Weis said.
Senior Chuck Sloan and sophomore Bruce Wright are the only two athletes returning from last year's team, which won its fourth straight District V meet and finished 14th at the NCAA Championships.
"We only have one guy off last year's top five returning (Sloan) and only two off the top seven (Sloan and Wright)," Weis said. "We're taking 11 guys up there to Wichita, and five of them are freshmen. We have a very young team."
After the Wichita Gold Classic, the Cowboys will next head to the Fordham Fiasco in New York City on Sept. 18. From there, they will come home to host the Cowboy Jamboree on Oct. 2.
