STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Cowgirl softball team will compete in the final tournament of the fall season this weekend as OSU travels to Kansas City, Mo., to compete in the UMKC Fall Classic. Games start Friday evening and continue through Sunday.
Fifteen teams from around the region will compete in the tournament, including Big 12 schools Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma State. Other top-caliber teams include Southwest Missouri State, Wichita State and Creighton from the Missouri Valley Conference.
The Cowgirls are coming off a doubleheader sweep of the Butler County Community College Grizzlies last Sunday. The twinbill was rescheduled after OSU's two mini-tournaments had to be cancelled due to rain.
Oklahoma State is led at the plate by freshman Ryan Realmuto, who is batting .375 with six hits in 16 at-bats. The Oklahoma high school Player of the Year also has a perfect fielding percentage behind the plate.
Senior Shelly Graham, the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year last season, leads the team with seven hits, and sophomore Paula Garman leds the team with three doubles and three runs batted in.
On the mound, the Cowgirls have four quality hurlers, starting with a pair of freshmen. Lauren Bay, from Trail, British Columbia, leads the team with a 2-0 record and a 0.00 earned run average. She also has 14 strikeouts in 13 innings. Karla Rivera, from Whittier, Calif., is 1-1 with a 0.53 ERA and just one earned run in 13-1/3 innings.
Sophomore Annie Gunderson has started one game and relieved in another, picking up a save in relief. Senior Sarah Knife Chief has 10 strikeouts in 11 innings.
