STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Cowgirl softball team swept a doubleheader from the Butler College Grizzlies here Sunday afternoon by scores of 5-0 and 3-2 at Little Couch Park. The two wins improve OSU's fall record to 4-3.
The games were played after both Cowgirl Mini-Classic tournaments were cancelled due to heavy rains Friday night. Butler was one of the teams scheduled to play in the tournament.
In the first game, OSU took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Shelly Graham scored on an attempted double steal with Paula Garman. Graham had a base hit and went to third when Garman reached on a fielder's choice.
The Cowgirls added to their run total in the bottom of the fourth. Lezli Leathers led off with a single, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Christina Shaddox. Leathers later scored when Casey O'Neill reached on an error, and another double steal, this time by O'Neill and Graham plated another run.
OSU finished its scoring drive in the sixth. With one out, Jenny Kipp hit a solo home run to straightaway center. Amy Campbell then hit a single to right, and scored on a double by Liz Silva during the next at-bat.
Freshman Lauren Bay threw five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out nine to pick up the win. Annie Gunderson threw the final two innings and threw two scoreless innings to pick up the save.
In game two, freshman Karla Rivera threw four innings, her only blemish being a two-run homer by Jenny Schmidt in the top of the fourth. Senior Sarah Knife Chief came in to throw the final three innings, striking out four to get the win.
Meanwhile, the Cowgirl offense struggled through the first four innings, getting five hits off Renae Shaw. But in the fifth, OSU scored three runs, two on a double by Bay, for the final score.
