STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State University student-athletes Doug Gottlieb, Devon Magness and Mercy Morrical have been named finalists for the Bank of America Big 12 Community Champion Award.
Each Big 12 institution was invited to nominate three student-athletes for the award, and all three Oklahoma State nominees were chosen as finalists. The student-athletes' selection was based on their accomplishments in Big 12 Conference athletics and in the community. In recognition of their excellence, Bank of America will make a $3,000 contribution to OSU's general scholarship fund.
A senior men's basketball player, Gottlieb is the most prolific passer in OSU and Big 12 history, holding every school and conference record for assists. He put in over 45 hours in the Adopt-A-Player Program in 1998 and was a Best of America speaker in 1998 and '99. He volunteered for Celebrate students in each of the past two years and was a volunteer for Child Watch trick-or-treating. He also served as a volunteer for the Highland Park Reading Program in 1997 and for the Oklahoma City Elementary Public Schools' "OmniFling" sports event in 1998. Last year, Gottlieb dedicated himself to a second-grade class and visited with them almost every week.
Magness, a junior on the Cowgirl basketball team, was a member of the Big 12 All-Star Team that toured Europe this past summer, and she has posted two points-rebounds double-doubles during her OSU career. She was a member of the Student-Athlete Board in 1998-99 and is president of the organization in 1999-2000. She put in 39 hours as a Special Olympics volunteer and 30 with the Adopt-A-Player Program in 1998-99. Among her numerous volunteer services are the 1998 Physical Phollies, the 1998 Glencoe (Okla.) Sports Camp, 1999 National Girls and Women in Sports Day, 1999 Citizens Caring for Children Fun Fest, 1997 Highland Park Reading Program, 1997 AFCA Child ID Distribution, 1998 OSU "Big Event" Community Service, 1998 Payne County Youth 24-Hour Relay, 1998 Celebrate Students and 1998 "Kids We Care" Fishing Derby. Magness has won OSU's Academic Achievement Award three times and was Honorable Mention Academic All-Big 12 last season.
Morrical is a three-year starter on the OSU women's soccer team and was the team's newcomer of the year in 1997. She volunteered for over 30 hours for the NACDA Campus Pals Program in 1998-99. In addition, she volunteered for the Child Watch trick-or-treat, Highland Park Reading Program, "Kids We Care" and AFCA Child ID Distribution in 1998, and she volunteered for Neighborhood Nursery and Celebrate Students in 1999.
