Men's Cross Country
This Week: idle Last Week: at Fordham Fiasco 1st/9
Oklahoma State's Cowboy cross country team had five of the top eight finishes as it won the Fordham Fiasco on Saturday morning at Van Cortlandt Park in New York City, N.Y.
The win gives the Cowboys first-place finishes in both of their meets this year. The Cowboys won the Wichita State Gold Classic on Sept. 5.
Senior Jerry Rainey led the Cowboys with a third-place finish and a time of 25:58, 58 seconds behind the winner. Chuck Sloan finished with a time of 26:23, good enough for a fourth-place finish. Sophomore Bruce Wright finished right on his heels with a time of 26:29 and a fifth-place finish.
Redshirt freshman Ben Lake ended the race just seconds behind Wright with a time of 26:33 to finish sixth. Junior Vasquez recorded a time of 26:50 for the Cowboys, earning an eighth-place finish in the race.
Also placing in the top 25 in the race for the Cowboys were Staffan Stegmark and Trey Vernon. Stegmark placed 17th with a time of 27:13, and Vernon's time of 27:16 earned him a 20th-place finish.
The Cowboys will return home to host the Cowboy Jamboree on Oct. 2 at the OSU Cross Country Course.
Women's Cross Country
This Week: Idle Last Week: at SMU Invitational 4th/7
Oklahoma State's Hanna Smedstad is two for two this season after finishing first in the SMU Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.
Two weeks ago, in the opening meet for the Cowgirls, Smedstad won the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational.
Smedstad was 13 seconds ahead of TCU's Gladys Keitany, who was expected to give Smedstad some real competition, with a time of 16:58. Keitany, placing second in the race, finished with a time of 17:11.
The second harrier across the line for the Cowgirls was junior Sara Wells. Wells finished 10th with a time of 18:31. Junior Araceli Davila finished the race in 18:58, placing 14th. Freshman Shavon Young claimed the No. 4 spot for the Cowgirls, placing 34th with a time of 20:08.
Overall, the Cowgirls placed fourth in the meet with 98 team points. Texas dominated the first-place spot with 36 points. Coming in second and third were the Oklahoma and Texas Christian, respectively.
The Cowgirls will return home to host the Cowboy Jamboree on Oct. 2 at the OSU Cross Country Course.
Football (2-1)
This Week: idle Last Week: Lost on the road vs. Mississippi State, 29-11
The Oklahoma State Cowboy football team will have a week to regroup after suffering its first loss of the season, 29-11 at the hands of the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
Freshman Dontae Walker rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown as the Bulldogs beat Oklahoma State on Saturday in a game marred by 12 turnovers - six by each team - and 195 yards in penalties.
Despite a fast start, Mississippi State was unable to seal the victory until Justin Griffith, another freshman, converted a screen pass from Wayne Madkin into a 52-yard touchdown with 6:58 left.
The Cowboys were within 22-11 with 10:13 left after 290-pound defensive end Cortney Mallory intercepted a pass and lumbered 46 yards for the score.
After an idle week, Oklahoma State's next test will be on Oct. 2 when the Cowboys travel to Lincoln, Neb., for a showdown with fifth-ranked Nebraska. Kickoff for the Big 12 contest has been moved up to 11:30 a.m. for Big 12 TV.
Men's Golf
This Week: Sept. 19-21 at Ping-Golfweek Preview in Auburn, Ala.
True freshman J.C. DeLeon made his collegiate debut with a 1-under-par round to lead the third-ranked OSU men's golf team into fourth place after Sunday's opening round of the Ping-Golfweek Preview.
DeLeon is in 11th place, four strokes off the pace set by Georgia's Bubba Watson. Clemson leads the tournament after recording a 9-under-par opening round. The Cowboys are 10 strokes back, tied for fourth with Arizona State, and OSU trails second-place Georgia and Northwestern by four strokes.
Junior Charles Howell carded an even-par 72 and is in 16th place, senior Edward Loar and sophomore Anders Hultman are one stroke behind him and in 27th place. Senior Landry Mahan recorded a 77 and is in 58th place.
The tournament continues Monday with one 18-hole round and concludes Tuesday with the third round. Competition is taking place at the Grand National Lake Course in Auburn, Ala.
Women's Golf
This Week: Thurs.-Sat. at Dick McGuire Invitational Last Week: at Big 12 Preview 2nd/12
Oklahoma State's Maria Bod?n shot a final-round 69 and won the individual title Tuesday afternoon in the Big 12 Fall Preview, leading the Cowgirls to a second-place finish. The OSU junior won the tournament by one stroke over Nebraska's Sarah Sasse, who had led the tournament since the first round. Bod?n, who trailed Sasse by five strokes entering Tuesday's round, recorded a birdie on the second hole and an eagle on the par-4 fourth to cut the lead to one. She tied for the first time on the fifth hole when Sasse shot a bogey and took a one-stroke lead on the 12th.
Sasse tied the score again on the 17th hole with a birdie, but on 18, she carded a five on the par 4 and Bod?n scored a par to win the tournament.
Cowgirl JoAnn Heller, who failed to qualify during the week and was playing as an individual, recorded a one-over 73 on the final day and finished tied for 10th with a 229. Her four-under 32 on the back nine was the lowest nine-hole round of the tournament.
Sophomore Emma Zackrisson and freshman Christi Cano both tied for 15th with identical scores of 231, while freshman Linda Wessberg finished tied for 29th. Senior Natasha Rowe finished tied for 40th.
Oklahoma State will next compete in the Dick McGuire Invitational on Sept. 23-25 in Albuquerque, N.M.
Soccer (1-7)
This Week: Friday vs. Denver, 7 p.m.
Last Week: Lost on the road vs. Portland, 9-0
Lost on the road vs. Washington, 3-0
The Cowgirls went 0-2 at the Portland Adidas Invitational, losing to the University of Portland 9-0 and Washington 3-0. OSU dropped to 1-7 on the season with the losses.
Two Cowgirls made homecomings as Andrea Larsen and Missy Moss both hail from the Portland region.
The Cowgirls will be back in action at home this Friday against Denver University, a team that beat them 2-1 in overtime last year in Denver.
Softball (1-1)

Won vs. Tulsa, 3-0
Oklahoma State's Cowgirl softball team split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, defeating Tulsa 3-0 after losing to Southwest Missouri State 5-4 in eight innings.
In the win over Tulsa, freshman Lauren Bay threw a one-hit shutout, walking just one Golden Hurricane while striking out four. She faced just two batters over the minimum, recording seven outs to start the game.
Meanwhile, the Cowgirl offense wasn't as easy to stop. In the fourth, Amanda Hayes scored on a double by Paula Garman after reaching on a base hit. Against the SMS Bears, OSU trailed 4-3 going into the final inning, Jennifer Olival-Cory led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a base hit by Garman, sending the game into extra innings.
After OSU failed to score in the top of the eighth, the Bears won the game when, using the international tie-breaker rule, Jennifer Reynolds scored from third on a base hit by Sarah Madden.
Oklahoma State will host Seminole Junior College on Tuesday, Sept. 21, in a tripleheader beginning at 3 p.m. The Cowgirls will also host a pair of mini-tournaments this weekend. Both will be played at Little Couch Park in Stillwater. The Cowgirls' game times will be 11 a.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day.
Women's Tennis

Oklahoma State's Cowgirl tennis squad will open the fall season when it participates in the T. Rowe Price Clay Court Nationals in Baltimore, Md. The tournament begins Thursday and will last through Sunday.
