STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Hanna Smedstad is two for two this season, after finishing first in the SMU Cross Country Invitational this morning.
Two weeks ago, in the opening meet for the Cowgirls, Smedstad won the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational.
Smedstad was 13 seconds ahead of TCU's Gladys Keitany, who was expected to give Smedstad some real competition, with a time of 16:58. Keitany, placing second in the race, finished with a time of 17:11.
"She was ecstatic," said Coach Catrina Acosta. "This is Hanna's best career speed in a cross country meet. She just came off of a heavy training week. I think she ran a total of 60 miles this week. I wish we could start track season right now."
The second harrier across the line for the Cowgirls was Junior Sara Wells. Wells finished 10th with a time of 18:31. Junior Araceli Davilia finished the race in 18:58, placing 14th. Freshman Shavon Young claimed the number four spot for the Cowgirls, placing 34th with a time of 20:08.
"Shavon was a nice surprise for me today. This really was her first big college competition. She did a great job and I'm really happy about it," Acosta said.
Overall, the Cowgirls placed fourth in the meet with 98 team points. The University of Texas dominated the first-place spot with 36 points. Coming in second and third were the University of Oklahoma and Texas Christian University, respectively.
"This meet allowed me to know where we are and what we need to do. As a group, we have a few things that we need to work on. But I am happy so far with the way things are going," Acosta said.
