STILLWATER, Okla. - Sara Wells, Araceli Davila and Shavon Young led the Cowgirls in their home meet this morning, without the help of Hanna Smedstad.
Smedstad, who finished first overall in the past two Cowgirl appearance for this season, dislocated her shoulder and was unable to run in the Cowboy Jamboree.
"I really wanted to run," Smedstad said. "The doctor said it's only going to take a few days to heal. I hope so because I'm planning on being back next weekend."
Wells, who has been the no. 2 runner for the Cowgirls so far this season, took the first-place spot for her team today. She finished the 5,000m run with a time of 18:39.
"Sara ran great," said Coach Catrina Acosta. "I am so happy. She looked tough and she didn't look like she was straining at all. I can tell that she is about to get really fast."
Davila took over the no. 2 spot for the team, finishing 35th with a time of 19:14. Shavon Young, at the no. 53 spot, wasn't far behind Davila. Young's 19:56 finish was her best time for the season.
"Shavon's performance today is so encouraging. It is great that she is already under 20 minutes. Hanna, Sara and Shavon have been my stars all year long. Today, Sara and Shavon just had to do it without Hanna, and they did," Acosta said.
Karla Dennis and Lindsey Tate captured the fourth and fifth spots for the team, with times of 21:11 and 22:19, respectively. Vera Waller finished with a time of 23:10. Newcomer Tiffany Hurst finished with 23:42. As a team, Oklahoma State finished in the 12th spot.
Alexandra Lindquist, who was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year for the 1998 season, was expected to make her first appearance for this season today. However, the two stress fractures in her feet that have kept her out all season also kept her from running in her team's home meet.
"We orginally thought Alex was going to be able to run today. And, actually, the doctor has given her the okay. We just want to be sure. Alex should run this weekend. Next week, we are going to run with the whole team together," Acosta said.
The Cowgirls will return to action Sat., Oct. 9, when they run at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla.
