STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's softball team will open the 1999 fall season this Saturday as the Cowgirls travel to Springfield, Mo. OSU will play Southwest Missouri State at noon and Tulsa at 2 p.m. in the three-team tripleheader.
"We're going to be going up against two Division I teams that are comparable to us this fall," said head coach Sandy Fischer. "We definitely want to go up there and win, so I don't know how feasible it would be for us to play everybody. We've got seven games vs. JCs (junior colleges) next week, and everybody will probably play then."
The Cowgirls return a large nucleus of veteran players, including All-Midwest Region player Jennifer Olival-Cory in centerfield, Casey O'Neill at shortstop, Christina Shaddox at first base and Liz Silva behind the plate. There are also several players that play multiple positions, including the Big 12 Newcomer-of-the-Year Shelly Graham, Amanda Hayes, Jenny Kipp and Paula Garman.
"I expect our veterans to step up and make the newcomers feel comfortable at the collegiate level," said Fischer. "We've got some fine athletes coming in, and we need to work together and play as a team."
Next week, Oklahoma State will host Seminole Junior College in a tripleheader on Tuesday starting at 3 p.m. at Little Couch Park.
