STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's athletic program finished 28th nationally and tied for third in the Big 12 when the final Sears Directors' Cup standings were released earlier this month. OSU accrued 280 points during the 1998-1999 athletic season to rank highly among the nation's 300-plus Division I institutions.
Oklahoma State has finished among the top 30 athletic programs in the nation six consecutive years since the Sears Directors' Cup was first awarded in 1994. Its highest finish was 24th for the 1997-1998 athletic campaign.
OSU's third place finish (tied with Colorado) marks its highest ranking ever received in the Big 12 Conference. Nebraska and Texas were the only schools scoring more points.
The Sears Cup is designed to honor the best broad-based athletic programs nationally. Points are awarded based on NCAA Championship finish (or, in the case of football, based on final poll rank). Oklahoma State's lofty rankings were fueled by a runner-up finish in men's golf, a third place finish in wrestling, a College World Series berth in baseball and a 12th place finish in women's golf.
Other sports scoring Sears Cup points for Oklahoma State were men's and women's cross country, men's and women's indoor track and men's basketball.
Developed as a joint effort between USA Today and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, the Sears Directors' Cup is the only all-sports competition that recognizes the four NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA institutions with the best overall athletics programs.
