SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. - After an impressive three rounds, sophomore Maria Galoustova was defeated in the semifinals of the ITA Rolex Cenral Region women's tennis tournament, in Salt Lake City.
Galoustova competed in the semifinal despite twisting her ankle during her last match on Friday. But the No. 1 seed, Tulsa's Anjousjka Van Exel, was too much, defeating Galoustova in straight sets 6-4, 6-0.
"I am very proud of Maria," said head coach Julius Lubcz-Majewski. "She has played very strong at No. 1 for us all season. She stepped in where the team needed her, and she produced."
The ITA Regional marks the end of the Cowgirls' 1998 fall season. Galoustova finished with a 9-2 record and a team high for singles victories. In doubles, teaming up with junior Martina Hautova, she posted a 6-1 record.
"We had a good fall season,"said coach Majewski. "Our success really helped us to gain confidence in our games. The experience will help in the spring play."
