Cross Country
Last Week: Idle
This Week: Region V Championships, Wichita, Kan.
The OSU men's and women's cross country teams begin their NCAA Championship runs this week when they compete in the Region V Championships in Wichita, Kan.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls finished second and sixth, respectively, at the Big 12 Championship meet Oct. 31. Chuck Sloan finished second individually at the conference meet, as did Hanna Smedstad on the women's side. Additionally, Alexandra Lindquist was named the conference newcomer of the year.
Football (3-6 Overall, 2-5 Big 12)
Last Week: Lost vs. Texas 37-34
This Week: Saturday vs. Southwestern Louisiana (2 p.m.)
Oklahoma State returns to Lewis Field this week for the first of two straight appearances that will close out the 1998 regular season. The Cowboys, 3-6 overall and 2-5 in Big 12 Conference play, will make a rare late-season excursion into non-league play as the Pokes host Southwestern Louisiana. The Ragin' Cajuns come to Stillwater with a record of 1-8.
Oklahoma State's season of near misses continued last week in Austin, Texas, where the Cowboys suffered a 37-34 loss to 20th-ranked Texas. The Cowboys twice rallied from double-digit deficits to tie the game at 34-34 with 10:25. Texas kicker Kris Stockton hit the left upright with a 29-yard field goal attempt with three seconds to play; the ball bounced through for the winning three-pointer.
Men's Basketball
Last Week: Idle
This Week: Tuesday vs. California All-Stars (exhibition, 7:05 p.m.) Friday vs. Athletes First (exhibition, 7:05 p.m.)
The OSU men's basketball team opens its 1998-99 schedule Tuesday at 7:05 p.m., when the Cowboys host the California East All-Stars in the team's first exhibition of the year.
The Cowboys have a lot of hype to live up to - they have been picked as the preseason favorite to win the Big 12 crown by the league's coaches and media and are ranked 13th in the Associated Press preseason poll. In addition, senior guard Adrian Peterson is the preseason Big 12 player of the year, and junior forward Desmond Mason joined Peterson on the coaches' preseason all-conference team.
OSU will face Athletes First in a second exhibition Friday at 7:05 p.m. and will open its regular season on Monday, Nov. 16, when it hosts Northwestern (La.) State.
Men's Golf
Last Week: 8th/18 at Golf World Palmetto Dunes
This Week: Idle
Junior Edward Loar picked up the fourth individual trophy of his career when he won the Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Collegiate Invitational this afternoon.
He led the top-ranked OSU team to an eighth-place finish; the Cowboys fired a 6-under-par score of 282, the second-best team score in the tourney, to move up from Saturday's surprising 13th-place position after 36 holes.
Loar, who becomes just the 11th player in OSU's storied history to win four or more tournaments, entered the day in third place but carded a final-round 67 to win the tournament by six strokes.
The tournament closes OSU's fall season; the Cowboys will next be in action Feb. 17-19 in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate.
Women's Basketball
Last Week: Defeated Iceland National Team, 72-40
This Week: Wednesday vs. Myjava Slovak Republic (exhibition, 7 p.m.) Saturday vs. SMU (7 p.m.)
Oklahoma State's Cowgirl basketball team picked up an impressive 72-40 win over an undersized Icelandic National Team behind a double-double by Devon Magness. The 6-7 center had 14 points and 10 rebounds in just 24 minutes of play. Junior Jennifer Crow and true freshman Coleman Smith each had nine points.
OSU will host its final exhibition game of the season on Wednesday, Nov. 11, as the Cowgirls host the Myjava Slovak Republic team at 7 p.m. Myjava is 1-4 so far with losses to Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Arkansas.
The Cowgirls will open the 1998-99 regular season on Saturday, Nov. 14, as OSU hosts the SMU Mustangs. Tipoff will be at 7 p.m. following the OSU-USL football game. OSU lost to SMU, 71-56, last season in the Southwestern Bell/Cotton Bowl Classic.
Women's Tennis
Last Week: Rolex Central Region Championship
This Week: Idle
Sophomore Maria Galoustova and junior Marketa Chmelova were the only women to represent OSU in the Rolex Central Region Championship.
Galoustova advanced to the semifinals in singles play before losing to Tulsa's Anousjka Van Exel in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Chmelova lost in the first round of the singles main draw, but battled back in the back draw before losing in the championship to Eva Notova from Kansas State 6-1, 6-2.
This tournament marked the conclusion of the Cowgirls' fall season.
