STILLWATER, Okla. - Three Oklahoma State men's cross country runners were named to the Academic All-American team by the United States Cross Country Coaches Association.
Seniors Rene Carlsen, Andrew Hennessy and Nathaniel Lane were part of the 35 athletes awarded the distinction of having some of the best grade point averages in the country.
Carlsen, who is from Odense, Denmark, had a geography GPA of 3.33 after last fall.
Hennessy, a native of Glastonbury, England, recorded a 4.0 for graduate studies in exercise science. He was one of only three athletes of sophomore standing or above to earn a perfect grade point average for the cross country season.
Lane, of Cardiff, Great Britain, earned a 3.52 in the Master's of Business Administration program.
Of the 28 athletes on both the cross country and track team rosters, 24 recorded a 3.0 GPA or better for the fall.
Stanford and Arkansas were the only other two schools to have more athletes on the All-American team. Both schools had four athletes each honored.
The Association also named the OSU team as one of 41 NCAA DIvision I schools to receive the honor of Academic All-American Team. The Cowboys' 3.17 GPA was just shy of the 3.25 GPA needed to be named All-American with distinction.
OSU tied with Marquette, Vanderbilt and Furman for the 19th-best GPA overall. Thirteen Cowboys combined for the average. Arkansas was the No. 1 school with a 3.41 GPA. OSU was one of three Big 12 schools winning team honors. Colorado (9th, 3.32) and Iowa State (10th, 3.26) were the other two.
