Softball Takes Second in NFCA Leadoff Classic
June 21, 1999 | Cowgirl Softball
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Oklahoma State's Cowgirl softball team defeated second-ranked Washington, 1-0, before falling to third-ranked Michigan in the championship game here Sunday afternoon in the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
Oklahoma State went undefeated up to the championship game, winning two games over ranked opponents. The Cowgirls defeated Washington, 1-0, in the semifinals before falling to the Wolverines, 8-1, in the championship game.
Senior pitcher Jenn Markert stuck out 10 Husky batters and gave up just one walk in her first one-hitter of the season. The Cowgirls scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth, as Michelle Ryan and Jaime Foutch each reached base on singles, both moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Shannon Sullivan, and Ryan scored on a squeeze bunt by second baseman Melissa Turley. UW's Kim DePaul attempted to tag Ryan out while running home, but missed the tag and Ryan scored.
Third-ranked Michigan was too much for OSU in the finals, scoring four runs in both the first and fifth innings. OSU's lone run came on consecutive doubles by Katie Wise and Kristine Garcia.
Oklahoma State (15-2) will next compete in the Fresno State Softball Classic, Friday-Sunday, Mar. 6-8, in Fresno, Calif.
