STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma's Lynette Velazquez hit two home runs, a solo shot to tie the game in the fourth and a two-run bomb to take the lead in the sixth, as the Sooners defeated Oklahoma State, 6-2, here Saturday night in the final softball game on Cowgirl Field.
Oklahoma State took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when All-American Jaime Foutch scored on a bases-loaded single by Liz Silva. Velazquez tied the game with the first of her two home runs.
OSU added a run in the bottom of the fifth, tying the score at 2-2. Cowgirl Jennifer Olival, who batted .514 in conference games to lead the team this season, scored on a base hit by Michelle Singer after Jaime Foutch was intentionally walked. Singer was thrown out at second attempting to advance on the throw.
Velazquez put the Sooners ahead for good in the sixth when she hit a towering shot to left field for her first multi-homer game of the season. It also broke the school record for dingers in a season, which was 17, set by Casey Dickson in 1997. OU added three more runs in the seventh on three hits, two walks and three wild pitches.
With the win, OU won the Big 12 regular-season championship with an 11-3 conference record. Texas is in second place at 8-4 with four games remaining. Even if the Longhorns were to win their final four games, the Sooners would be ahead by percentage points.
More than 500 fans came to acknowledge the final home game for eight OSU seniors, who played the final home game of their collegiate careers. Those seniors are: Casey Acree, Sheryl Anderson, Jaime Foutch, Kristine Garcia, Michelle Singer, Shannon Sullivan, Melissa Turley and Katie Wise. All were an integral part of the Cowgirls' 1998 Women's College World Series appearance.
