Softball Moves Into Gold Bracket

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Oklahoma State's Cowgirl softball team continued its winning ways Saturday afternoon, winning two games and finishing pool play with a 4-0 record here at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
The Cowgirls, ranked ninth in the country by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, defeated Notre Dame, 4-0, and eighth-ranked California, 1-0, to advance to the Gold Bracket of the tournament.
OSU pitchers Amy Lopez and Leanne Tyler combined for two shutouts on the day, each picking up wins. Lopez, a sophomore from San Diego, Calif., pitched a two- hitter and the Cowgirl offense scored two runs in both the third and fifth innings for the win.
In the bottom of the third, Casey Acree got a base hit and moved to second on a single by leadoff batter Kristi Boelle. Both advanced on a wild pitch, and the Acree was thrown out on a fielder's choice by Michelle Ryan. Boelle scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Jaime Foutch, and Ryan scored on a base hit by Michelle Singer.
In the fifth, Foutch scored on a single by Melissa Turley after reaching base on an error. A fielder's choice by Leanne Tyler scored Singer for the final run of the game.
In the nightcap vs. California, OSU's Tyler struck out six Golden Bear batters and plated the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly that scored Turley. Tyler upped her record to 4-0 for the season.
Besides Oklahoma State (14-1), second-ranked Washington, third-ranked Michigan, and either No. 6 Oklahoma or No. 10 Florida State will compete in the Gold Bracket. Games are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. EST.
