NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma's Lisa Carey and Ashli Barrett each hit solo home runs in the third inning and pitcher Lana Moran scattered six hits over seven complete innings as the fifth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners won 2-1 over the 12th- ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirls here Wednesday night before1,153 fans at the OU Softball Complex.
Both Carey's and Barrett's home runs went over the leftfield fence and hit the scoreboard off OSU's Jenn Markert. Sophomore Amy Lopez came on in relief of Markert following the second home run and threw 3-1/3 scoreless innings.
Oklahoma State had its opportunities, getting at least one runner aboard in every inning. The Cowgirls best opportunity came in the top of the first, when Kristi Blle singled to centerfield to start the game. Junior Casey Acree failed to bunt Blle over, and Jaime Foutch then hit into a fielder's choice. Shannon Sullivan followed that with a base hit, but Michelle Singer flied out to end the inning.
Down 2-0 in the top of the seventh with two outs, Blle hit her third home run of the season down the left field line to make the score 2-1. But Kristine Garcia, who entered the game in the middle of the sixth in place of Acree, grounded out to the first baseman to end the game.
Blle finished the game going 3-for-4, while Sullivan, Melissa Turley and Liz Silva each had one hit. Oklahoma State left seven runners on base, but had no errors in the game for the first time in the last seven games.
Oklahoma improved its record to 43-10 overall and 11-3 in Big 12 Conference play. Oklahoma State fell to 33-15 overall and 7-7 in the league. The Cowgirls will host the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday at Cowgirl Field in Stillwater. The doubleheader will begin at 12 p.m.
