OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Oklahoma State's bid for an upset fell just short, or just long over the outstretched glove of Michelle Ryan, as Arizona defeated Oklahoma State, 1-0, here Thursday in the first round of the Women's College World Series at Hall of Fame Stadium.
UA first baseman Toni Mascarenas hit a first-pitch solo home run just over the arm of Ryan, who got a good jump on the ball. Ryan dove up and over the outfield fence, but the ball hit the bleachers on the other side of the leftfield fence. It was Mascarenas seventh dinger of the season.
OSU senior hurler Jenn Markert threw an outstanding game, barring one pitch. She gave up just four hits to the top-ranked Wildcats, while striking out five and walking four. Following the home run in the bottom of the sixth, Markert was able to work herself out of a bases-loaded jam by striking out the next two batters.
OSU had an opportunity in the top of the third to put a run on the board. Liz Silva led off the inning with a walk, but the next two batters, both in an attempt to advance her over, struck out. Kristi Bolle then hit a single to left field, which would have scored Silva had she been at second. The next batter then grounded out to end the inning.
Oklahoma State's only other hit came in the top of the seventh, when junior All-American Jaime Foutch led off with a base hit. Shortstop Shannon Sullivan sacrificed Foutch over, but then Arizona pitcher Nancy Evans forced both Michelle Singer and Melissa Turley to flyout to right field to end the game.
Oklahoma State will play the loser of the Washington-UMass game Saturday at 12 p.m.
