Softball Defeats Wichita State, 4-3 in Eight Innings

WICHITA, Kan. - Pinch runner Jenny Kipp scored on an error by Susie Gates with two outs in the top of the eighth as Oklahoma State's softball team defeated Wichita State, 4-3, here Wednesday night before 242 fans at Wilkins Stadium.
OSU took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when leadoff hitter Shelly Graham scored on an RBI single by All-American Jaime Foutch. Wichita State came back to score two in the bottom of the inning, thanks to two Cowgirl errors.
Oklahoma State tied the game in the top of the third when Graham once again scored, this time safe at home on a double steal with Kristine Garcia swiping second. OSU added an insurance run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Melissa Turley.
Wichita State fought back, scoring on a base hit by Sara Stiverson that scored Misti Catlege in the bottom of the seventh. Wichita State Coach Jim Maynard attempted to end the game in regulation, sending Stiverson home on a base hit to right field, but OSU's Katie Wise threw her out at the plate, sending the game to extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Sheryl Anderson scored from third on an error by Gates that sent the ball into shallow left field. Freshman Jessica Jenkins finished the game by sitting down the side in the bottom of the inning, picking up the win.
"This game was important for us because it was a regional game," said OSU Coach Sandy Fischer. "This is a new season for us, and we need to start winning against teams that are in our region. Hopefully, this will light a fire under our kids for the start of conference play."
Oklahoma State (13-13) will open Big 12 Conference action this Saturday as the Cowgirls host the Kansas Jayhawks in a doubleheader starting at noon. On Sunday, OSU will host Missouri in a noon doubleheader.
