Oklahoma State Wins Two in Softball Classic

STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State opened the 1998 fall softball season by hosting the first of two mini-tournaments Saturday afternoon at Cowgirl Field. The Tulsa Golden Hurricane won the team title as it went 3-0 in the tournament.
The Cowgirls finished the day with a record of 2-1, with wins over Howard College, 4-0, and Central Oklahoma, 15-0. The only loss came in the afternoon game vs. Tulsa, 6-5, in eight innings.
In the Cowgirls' first game against Tulsa, Oklahoma State could not overcome four runs scored in the seventh and eighth innings. For the Cowgirls, Kristine Garcia was 3-for-4, with two triples, and two runs scored. Melissa Turley and Sheryl Anderson had two hits apiece.
Against Howard College, OSU pitcher Casey O'Neill pitched a complete-game one-hitter for the 4-0 win. Shelly Graham, a transfer from Pittsburg State, led off for the Cowgirls and went 2-for-4.
In the nightcap, Oklahoma State tallied 16 hits in four innings to fuel the mercy-rule over Central Oklahoma, 15-0. The Cowgirls scored eight runs in the in the fourth inning, capped off by a grand slam by catcher Michelle Singer. Singer was 4-for-4 in the game with five RBI. Jennifer Olival added the first collegiate home run of her career to the fire.
On the day, Garcia went 5-for-6 with four runs scored and three triples, along with three stolen bases. Singer and Graham each added five hits, as the duo went 10-for-23.
Oklahoma State returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 20, as the Cowgirls host the second and final mini-tournament of the fall season.
