STILLWATER, Okla.- This summer Oklahoma State University's video board will be on vacation from it's usual home at Lewis Field as it goes racing with NASCAR.
Amidst all of the construction surrounding Lewis Field and Gallagher-Iba Arena one may not even notice OSU's video board is not in it's usual place. Instead of spending the summer unused in Lewis Field the board will be traveling around the East Coast as a mobile unit.
The video board's summer travels will reap monetary benefits for Oklahoma State. "Video board use at NASCAR gives universities the opportunity to earn additional revenue," said Tamara Leland a StadiaNet sports representative.
"OSU is currently in a revenue sharing plan with StadiaNet Sports, a company that specializes in a network of university video boards," said OSU Athletic Department representative Kerry O'Keefe. Oklahoma State is one of the properties owned by StadiaNet.
May 12 the video board was taken apart in hundreds of small pieces and loaded onto an 18 wheeler truck with a flat bed. After traveling to North Carolina the board will be put back together as a mobile unit.
Oklahoma State's video board is one of six university video boards being used by NASCAR this summer. The other boards being used are from the University of Alabama, Purdue University, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, and the University of Mississippi. Purdue's video board was also used in the Super Bowl this past January.
The SpiriTron will be back in its usual spot on the scoreboard August 27, one week before Oklahoma State's first home football game.
