Saturday's Game: Oklahoma State looks to bounce back from a shocking loss when the 11th-ranked Cowboys meet 18th-ranked UCLA in the John R. Wooden Classic. OSU saw its 80-game homecourt non-conference winning streak snapped by an unlikely competitor, Florida Atlantic, on Tuesday.
The Series: Saturday's game marks the first time OSU has squared off with UCLA since the teams met in the 1995 Final Four. The Bruins were victorious in that contest by a 74-61 count (see page 6-27 of the OSU media guide for a recap and box score) and own a 3-2 edge in the all-time series. Cowboys coach Eddie Sutton has a 1-1 record against UCLA, having defeated the Bruins while he was at Arkansas.

OSU Coach Eddie Sutton: Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his ninth year at OSU and his 29th year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to the NCAA Tournament six times. Sutton currently owns a career record of 613-242 (71.7 percent) overall and is 183-78 (70.1 percent) at OSU. Sutton is just the seventh coach to reach 600 wins in 28 or fewer seasons.
About UCLA: The Bruins, 3-0 in their Wooden Classic history with victories over Kentucky (1994), Maryland (1995) and New Mexico (1997), are 3-2 this season with both losses coming to top-10 teams. UCLA is led in scoring and rebounding by forward/center Jerome Moiso (13.8 ppg).

Cowboys' unbeaten string ends in upset: Florida Atlantic's Gary Durrant scored a freak layup with 1.9 seconds left to give the Owls an amazing upset victory over Oklahoma State on Tuesday. After OSU junior guard Joe Adkins had tied the game with a three-pointer at the one-minute mark, the Cowboys forced the Owls into a missed shot with six seconds left. Adkins came down with the rebound, but as he began to bring the ball upcourt, he tripped, and the ball bounced into Durrant's surprised arms. Adkins' desperation three-point attempt at the buzzer missed, and FAU had pulled off the biggest victory in its history.
Homecourt streak ends in shocker: Cowboys fans will forever have the names Missouri Southern and Florida Atlantic linked in their memories after FAU became the first non-league opponent in almost 12 full years to win at Gallagher-Iba Arena. Until Tuesday, the Cowboys' last non-conference loss in Gallagher-Iba was an 81-75 setback against Missouri Southern on Jan. 7, 1987, and the last Division non-conference opponent to win in Stillwater was Tulsa in 67-58 decision Dec. 21, 1985. OSU's 80-game non-league win streak at Gallagher-Iba Arena was the longest such current streak in the country; Maryland now has the longest streak at 63 games, and North Carolina is second at 52.
The Cowboys's streak finishes as the fifth-longest in NCAA history; a victory over the Owls would have tied OSU for third all-time with Marquette and DePaul. Ironically, Florida Atlantic did not have a men's basketball program at the time OSU's streak began. The Owls began play as a Division II member in 1988-89 and moved to Division I in 1993-94.
Adkins' shooting nearly brings OSU back against Owls: ESPN highlights of Tuesday's game showed Adkins losing the ball as FAU scored its game-winner, but without Adkins' second-half shooting, the Cowboys might not have been in position to send the game to overtime. Adkins hit a career-high five three-pointers, including four in the second half as he keyed OSU's comeback, and pulled down a career-high eight rebounds in the game. Adkins finished with a team-high 19 points. The junior guard also led OSU in scoring in the season-opening victory over Northwestern State, scoring 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting.
Gottlieb has school-record night at the point: Junior guard Doug Gottlieb set a school record for assists average last season (6.9 apg), and with a 9.4 average through five games, he's well on his way to a similar number in 1998-99, especially after dishing out a school- and Big 12-record 18 assists against Florida Atlantic. In the two tournament games in Hawaii, he had 15 assists and just one turnover. In addition, Gottlieb hit a career-high three three-pointers on Nov. 19 in the 57-54 victory over Marquette, finishing with 11 points. He now has eight double-figure assist games in his career, which ranks second in school history behind Andre Owens' nine.
Webber breaks scoring drought in a big way Junior Alex Webber has started all five games at center for OSU, but he did not score in the Cowboys' first three games of the year. Against TCU, though, Webber hit four of five field-goal attempts and scored 10 points despite fouling out after playing only 23 minutes. Webber scored in double figures for just the second time in his career and the first since he scored 22 against Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 4, 1996. However, he did not have to wait another two years before his next double-figure outing; Webber scored 17 points and pulled down a career-high nine rebounds against Florida Atlantic.
Cowboys come out on top in seesaw battle with TCU: OSU scored a season-high 49 points in the second half, hitting 55.6 percent of its field-goal attempts and going 15-for-19 from the free-throw line, as the Cowboys earned a hard-fought victory Saturday over TCU and former Oklahoma Coach Billy Tubbs. The Cowboys picked up the "W" despite a 30-point performance from the Horned Frogs' Lee Nailon, a national preseason player-of-the-year candidate. The game featured 19 lead changes and 11 ties, with OSU breaking the final tie at the 1:02 mark.
Peterson's clutch shooting keys TCU victory: Senior guard Adrian Peterson, the preseason Big 12 player of the year, struggled with his shot early against TCU, hitting just one of his first seven three-point attempts. But Peterson saved his best for last; he hit his last three three-point attempts, including one that erased TCU's last lead with 3:18 remaining and one that broke the game's final tie with 1:02 left. He finished the game with 22 points and a season-high eight rebounds.
After recording 21 points and a career-best six steals in the season-opening victory over Northwestern State, Peterson tied another career high by nailing five three-pointers against Marquette. Peterson, the VoiceStream Wireless Challenge Most Valuable Player, moved into OSU's career scoring top 10 last week and now has 1,358 points in his career. He needs 20 points to tie Bob Mattick for ninth in school history.
Mason has big night against Horned Frogs: Junior forward Desmond Mason, a preseason all-conference honoree, recorded his first double-double of the season with a 26-point, 13-rebound night against TCU. Both those numbers were one shy of Mason's career highs as he earned the ninth double-double of his career, tying him with Raymond Crenshaw for eighth in school history in that category. He recorded the eighth 20-point game of his career and tied a career high with eight free throws, including two that clinched the victory with 3.3 seconds left. His productive stats in two Hawaii games (21 points, 13 rebounds) earned him all-tournament status in the VoiceStream Wireless Challenge.
Cowboys' trip to Honolulu results in championship: OSU picked up its first tournament trophy in four years when the Cowboys came home with the VoiceStream Wireless Challenge championship by defeating Marquette and Hawaii. Oklahoma State's most recent regular-season tournament triumph came at the Bank IV Classic during the 1994-95 season. The Cowboys also won the 1991 Preseason NIT; those had been the only two in-season tourney trophies for OSU in the past 15 seasons.
High-octane offense takes back seat in Hawaii: OSU coaches and players bristle at the team's national reputation as a halfcourt-oriented, slow-it-down offensive club, and rightly so: The Cowboys' 78.9 ppg scoring average a year ago ranked third in the Big 12 and was the team's best mark in six years. In the Hawaii tournament, however, opponents' strategy, the 45-second clock and a big lead against Hawaii conspired to slow OSU's scoring pace. The games marked the first time since the final two games of the 1995-96 season that OSU had scored fewer than 60 points in back-to-back games, and it was the first time that the Cowboys had won back-to-back games when scoring under 60 both times since the Henry Iba-coached 1964-65 team accomplished the feat. OSU averaged 57.5 points in Hawaii and has averaged 83.3 points in its three games on the mainland.
Gilmore expected to miss four weeks after operation: Junior forward John Gilmore is expected to miss around four weeks after undergoing a hernia operation Thursday. The 6-7 transfer from Tyler (Texas) JC, who was averaging 1.7 points and 0.7 rebounds, developed the injury during Thanksgiving weekend and missed the TCU contest as well.
Cowboy Radio Network: OSU games will be broadcast on the OSU Radio Network with KWTV's Bill Teegins handling play-by-play duties and Tom Dirato, OSU coordinator of radio & TV, providing commentary. Dirato and Teegins are in their eighth year as the Cowboys' basketball radio team, and Dirato is calling OSU men's basketball for the 22nd season.

Looking ahead: The Cowboys will square off with Arkansas-Little Rock in Oklahoma City on Dec. 12 and return home for a Dec. 15 contest with Houston Baptist, one of just three home games in December. OSU visits Missouri Valley favorite Creighton on Dec. 20 and WAC power UNLV on Dec. 22.
Head Coach Eddie Sutton: Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his ninth year at his alma mater with a 183-78 record at the school as well as a 613-242 overall mark in his 29th year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to postseason play in seven of eight years and has won 20 games or more six times. Sutton is the 20th coach in Division I history to reach the 600-victory mark, and he is just the seventh coach to reach it in 28 years or less, joining Denny Crum, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Jerry Tarkanian and John Wooden.
Only three active coaches (Crum, Knight and Tarkanian) rank ahead of Sutton in both victories and winning percentage, and only one other coach - Nov. 28 foe Billy Tubbs - joins OSU's boss in having won coach-of-the-year awards in four different leagues. Sutton, who previously coached at Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky, is the only coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to the national tournament. With Sutton and Henry P. Iba among the 600-win club, OSU is one of only three schools - joining Illinois and Kentucky - with two coaches among the all-time top 20.

Noting the Cowboys
- Until defeating Hawaii 58-37, OSU had not held a foe under 40 points since a 72-34 victory over Kansas State on Jan. 6, 1992, and the Cowboys had not held an opponent under 50 since the 67-49 victory over College of Charleston on Dec. 18, 1996. Hawaii scored less than 40 points for the first time since 1982.
- Fredrik Jonzen scored a career-high eight points in the loss to Florida Atlantic.
- TCU's Lee Nailon (30 points) and Florida Atlantic's Gary Durrant (31) became the first opposing players to score 30 points against OSU in consecutive games since Nebraska's Eric Piatkowski and Colorado's Donnie Boyce scored 32 and 46 points, respectively, in March 1994. Were a UCLA player to score 30 points, it would mark the first time since December 1977 that three Cowboys opponents hit the 30-tally mark.
Montonati leads Cowboys in VoiceStream title game: Junior forward Brian Montonati did not earn all-tournament honors in Hawaii, but he was almost certainly the MVP of the championship game. Montonati set career highs with 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Cowboys to the victory over Hawaii and scored 10 points during OSU's 23-2 second-half run that put the game away.
