STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State finished the 1997-98 academic year ranked 24th in the nation in overall athletic success as ranked by the Sears Directors' Cup standings released last week and published in USA Today.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls finished fourth among Big 12 schools; OSU's standing in the Directors' Cup was helped by top-five NCAA finishes in wrestling (third), softball (fourth) and mens golf (fourth).
"It's very rewarding to have such a successful season recognized with a top-25 national ranking while establishing ourselves as one of the top programs in the conference," said director of athletics Terry Don Phillips. "It continues to show that we have one of the nation's best group of coaches and some of the hardest-working student-athletes."
Other OSU sports to compete in NCAA Championship events and earn Directors' Cup points were men's cross country (14th), baseball (17th), men's basketball (17th), men's tennis (17th), football (24th in wire service polls), women's golf (25th), women's indoor track (38th) and men's outdoor track (56th).
The Sears Directors' Cup program, which awards Waterford Crystal trophies to the top athletics programs and a total of $100,000 postgraduate academic scholarships to students in all four collegiate divisions (Divisions I, II, III and NAIA), is presented in partnership by Sears and NACDA. The Sears Directors' Cup is the only national awards and academic scholarship program to recognize all NCAA and NAIA championship sports for both women's and men's athletics.
