No. 8 Cowgirls Split Doubleheader with Tulsa.
June 21, 1999 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's eighth-ranked Cowgirl softball team jumped out to a 3-0 lead before defeating Tulsa in game one, but had just one hit off TU's Krystel Markwardt in a 2-0 loss here Wednesday evening at Cowgirl Field.
Oklahoma State scored a run in the bottom of the third and added one more in each of the fifth and sixth before the Golden Hurricane scored one in the seventh for the 3-1 win. Amy Lopez pitched seven complete innings, scattering seven hits while striking out three. Casey Acree went 2-for-4 with a run batted in and Sheryl Anderson went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored.
In the second game, Markwardt, a freshman from Tulsa, Okla., handcuffed the Cowgirls, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out five. She retired the final 13 batters she faced, using a barrage of fastballs and changeups. OSU's lone hit was a double by Shannon Sullivan in the second inning.
It was the first win ever for Tulsa over Oklahoma State, with OSU owning an 11-1 record vs. the Golden Hurricane. It was also TU's seventh win of the season over a ranked opponent.
Oklahoma State (29-10, 3-2 Big 12) will return to conference action this weekend as the Cowgirls travel to Kansas and Missouri for doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday starting at 12 p.m.
