STILLWATER, Okla. - With three runners finishing in the top ten, Oklahoma State men's cross country team took second place at the Big 12 Championships in Lincoln, Neb. today.
Senior Chuck Sloan was the second runner across the finish line in the meet, with a time of 24:35.5 for the 8,000-meter event. Senior Nathaniel Lane finished sixth with a time of 24:50.4. Senior Rene Carlsen took eighth in 24:53.1.
But, even with three top-ten runners, the Cowboys still fell 15 points behind No. 4 Colorado, which won the meet with 31 points. Colorado's Adam Goucher won the race with a time of 23:45.7, breaking the course record.
"We knew the minimum requirement to win was to have five runners in the top ten," said Cowboy Head Coach Dick Weis. "Colorado's Adam Goucher is a great runner. He finished 26th at the World Cross Country meet."
OSU's women's team finished in sixth place in the women's 5,000 meter with 114 points. Kansas State won the meet with a total score of 78 points.
"There were six teams that were running really close before the meet-Nebraska, Baylor, Texas, Kansas State, Colorado, and us," said Cowgirl Head Coach Catrina Acosta. "I don't think there was a clear-cut favorite picked to win."
The Cowgirls had two runners finish in the top ten. Senior Hanna Smedstad, who was awarded Big 12 Runner of the Week two weeks in a row, placed second in the meet. She finished the race with a time of 17:25.4, not too far behind first-place runner Sherri Smith of Baylor, who finished in 17:17.9. Freshman Alexandra Lindquist finished with a time of 17:42.8, earning the fifth-place win.
Both teams will compete in the NCAA District V Championships Nov. 14 in Wichita, Kan.
