OSU TO COMPETE IN BIG 12 TOURNAMENT
Oklahoma State enters the 1999 Big 12 Tournament as the No. 8 seed and will
meet No. 9 Iowa State in a play-in game Wednesday, May 12, at 5 p.m. at the
Don E. Porter/Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. OSU finished the
regular season with a 20-22 record, 4-8 in conference play. The Cowgirls and
Cyclones did not play this season. Should Oklahoma State win the game, it
will face the top-seeded Oklahoma Sooners on Thursday at 10 a.m. as part of
the eight-team, double-elimination bracket. The next opponent for either OSU
or ISU after Oklahoma would be either No. 4 Nebraska or No. 5 Kansas.
COWGIRL NOTE-ABLE
FOUTCH OWNING RECORD BOOKS
Cowgirl senior Jaime Foutch owns more than half of the 32 all-time OSU
offensive records. She owns or is tied for four single-game records, six
single-season records, and 10 career records; 20 in all. Here is a look at
the records Foutch holds ... games played in a season and a career; career
at-bats; career runs; hits in a game and a career; doubles in a game, season
and career; home runs in a game, season and career; total bases in a season
and career; slugging percentage in a season and career; RBIs in a game,
season and career; and walks in a career.
OLIVAL STREAKS TO THE TOP
Junior Jennifer Olival, who came to OSU after her freshman year at Oral
Roberts on a basketball scholarship, has put herself in position for
postseason honors. The Choctaw, Okla., native is currently batting .398 and
is on an eight-game hitting streak. Over that span of eight games, she has
seven multiple-hit games, and is batting 16-for-30, good for a .533 average.
She has also scored at least one run in the last six games. Jennifer is also
spectacular in the field, making many over-the-shoulder catches, and pulling
several balls back into play from over the outfield fence.
TWO COWGIRLS HONORED
Oklahoma State's Melissa Turley and Kristine Garcia were both honored by the
Big 12 Conference with the NationsBank Community Champion Award this season.
Turley was featured on the Big 12 Showcase three weeks ago, while Garcia
will be honored on the same program in the future. Both were nominated by
Oklahoma State's Athletic Department for their dedication to the Stillwater
community and to several charitable organizations. OSU's only other honoree
was Cowboy tailback Jamaal Fobbs, who received the accolade during the fall
semester.
SERIES VS. IOWA STATE
Oklahoma State leads the overall series with Iowa State by a 35-11 count,
including the last six meetings since 1996. The doubleheader between these
two teams in Ames was rained out this season. OSU is 19-5 vs. the Cyclones
at neutral sites, and 8-3 vs. ISU in the conference tournament. The Cowgirls
won 15 in a row vs. Iowa State in the series, and have won 23 of the last 25
meetings. ISU's only wins were in 1994, when the Cyclones won 2-of-4 in
Ames.
SERIES VS. OKLAHOMA
Should OSU defeat Iowa State in the play-in game, the Cowgirls' first
opponent will be bedlam-rival Oklahoma. Although OSU owns the all-time
series, 67-42, the Sooners have won the last five games, one of which was in
last season's conference tournament. OSU is 20-11 all-time vs. OU on neutral
fields, and 6-3 vs. the Sooners in the conference tournament.
SERIES VS. NEBRASKA and KANSAS
If Oklahoma State defeats Iowa State in the play-in game, regardless of
whether the Cowgirls win or lose to Oklahoma, they will play either Nebraska
or Kansas in their second game. OSU is 38-26 all-time vs. Nebraska,
including an 8-6 mark in games played in the conference tournament. Versus
Kansas, OSU is 47-34 all-time, including an 11-5 mark in the conference
tournament. The Cowgirls have won the last three conference-tournament
meetings with Kansas, including a 1-0 win last year. Oklahoma State also won
the last conference-tournament meeting with Nebraska, an 8-7, 18-inning
victory in 1997.
