WICHITA, Kan. - Oklahoma State's softball team, ranked 10th in the nation according to the USA Today/ NFCA Coaches Poll, swept a doubleheader from the Wichita State Shockers here Thursday night, but it wasn't easy.
Oklahoma State scored just two runs in the first game, both solo home runs in the top of the fourth, but that was all it took as OSU won, 2-0. Juniors Jaime Foutch and Michelle Singer each hit dingers, Foutch's a high fly over the left field wall, Singers a line drive that just cleared the 220 feet mark in left center. Meanwhile, sophomore pitcher Amy Lopez threw a five-hit shutout while striking out seven and walking just two in picking up her seventh win of the season.
Game two was a little bit different. The Cowgirls scored in the top of the first when senior third baseman Kristi Boelle singled and stole second. She then scored on a wild pitch and put OSU up, 1-0.
Wichita State went ahead in the bottom of the second. With two outs and runners on second and third, Erin Mikelson hit a pop fly into shallow right centerfield. Second baseman Liz Silva went back for the ball, which hit the heel of her glove and the ground. Both runners scored, and WSU led, 2-0.
Oklahoma State left runners on base in both the fourth and sixth innings, and with one out in the seventh, Silva made up for the error with a solo home run over the left field wall, tying the score at 2-2.
Both teams had opportunities to score, but failed. Using the international tiebreaker rule, OSU placed shortstop Shannon Sullivan on second in the top of the 11th inning. She advanced to third on a groundout by Michelle Singer, and scored on a base hit by Katie Wise. Melissa Turley followed that with a base hit of her own, and both runners scored on a triple by centerfielder Kristine Garcia with two out. Oklahoma State won the game, 5-2.
"We're beginning to play like the Cowgirls of old," said OSU Coach Margaret Rebenar. "We kind of stubbed our toe last weekend, but about halfway through the second game tonight, we really stepped it up and played well, both on offense and defense. That's what we're going to need entering conference play."
Oklahoma State (25-7) extended its winning streak over Wichita State to 48 games, including 29 shutouts. The Cowgirls now lead the series, 54-2. Wichita State fell to 12-15 on the season.
The Cowgirls will begin conference action on Wednesday, April 1, as OSU hosts bedlam-rival Oklahoma in a 6:30 p.m. matchup. Several promotions will be included in the evening, including free hot dogs to the first 100 OSU students with a valid OSU I.D., and giveaways including Carmike Cinema Passes, a Super Joe-Bachi Grill from Oklahoma Joe's, Golf Passes to Cimarron Trails, and a pizza from Pizza Shuttle.
