STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's eighth-ranked softball team split a doubleheader with the Kansas Jayhawks here Saturday afternoon, winning the first game 1-0 before falling 3-1 in the second. It was the fourth consecutive doubleheader OSU has split this season.
The Cowgirls scored their lone run of the first game in the top of the third. Pitcher Leanne Tyler led off the inning with a double, and with two outs, advanced to third on a base hit by centerfielder Michelle Ryan. Tyler then scored on an RBI single by junior Jaime Foutch before Shannon Sullivan grounded out to end the inning. Sullivan went 2-for-3 in the game.
Tyler started the game and pitched five innings for OSU, giving up seven hits while striking out five and walking just one. She is now 9-3 on the season. Jenn Markert came on in the sixth and pitched two complete innings to pick up her third save of the season.
In game two, Kansas scored three runs on eight hits, including consecutive-RBI base hits with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Kansas took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Sara Holland, who went 3-for-4 in the game, scored on a base hit by Michelle Hubler.
After four scoreless innings, Oklahoma State tied the game in the top of the sixth when Ryan scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by junior Melissa Turley. But, in the bottom of the sixth, Kansas scored the eventual winning run on the back-to-back RBI singles.
OSU was limited to just two hits and could not take advantage of seven walks issued by KU starter Christy McPhail. Jessica Kowal, who pitched the entire first game, came on in the sixth and picked up the save.
"It was another one of those situations where we won the first game, but could not sweep (the doubleheader)," said OSU Coach Margaret Rebenar. "We don't seem to be able to stay focused for two complete games."
Oklahoma State (30-11 overall, 4-3 Big 12) will travel to Columbia, Mo., on Sunday to play the Missouri Tigers (29-12, 3-7) in another conference doubleheader. The first game will start at 12 p.m.
