BROKEN ARROW, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Cowgirl softball team pulled off a 4-1 win over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane here Wednesday evening, despite leaving 14 runners on base in the non-conference victory.
Cowgirl hurler Sheryl Anderson threw a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out five, all in the fifth and sixth innings. She improved her record this season to 4-4. Angela Wedlake, the starter for Tulsa, picked up the loss, despite giving up no earned runs as the Golden Hurricane had six errors in the field.
Michelle Singer, Casey O'Neill and Paula Garman each had two hits for Oklahoma State as the Cowgirls belted nine hits. In six of the seven innings, OSU left at least two runners on base, stranding just one in the second inning.
Tulsa started the scoring in the bottom of the first when the Golden Hurricane started the inning with three consecutive hits, loading the bases. Cleanup hitter Kelly Wilkerson then walked, scoring Jessie Smith. Anderson forced Wedlake to pop up to third base, and then Alexis Gutierrez was thrown out at home by Shelly Graham while trying to score on a fly ball to shallow left field to end the inning.
Oklahoma State scored in the top of the third when, with one out, Kristine Garcia reached on an error by TU's Dawn Reed. Consecutive singles by Jaime Foutch and Michelle Singer loaded the bases, and both Garcia and Foutch scored when Reed hit Garcia in the helmet attempting to get the force at home.
OSU added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh when O'Neill scored from second on a hit by Garman. With two outs and runners on first and second, shortstop Tiffany Redding overthrew first base on a grounder by Garcia, allowing Garman to score from second.
Oklahoma State (14-15) will take the weekend off before hosting Tulsa next Wednesday, April 7, at Cowgirl Field in Stillwater. Tulsa (13-23) will travel to San Diego State this weekend for conference games before traveling to Stillwater next week.
