STILLWATER, Okla.-- On Jan. 12, Oklahoma State University officials broke ground on a $51 million Athletic Center project, but Director of Athletics Terry Don Phillips isn't content to stop there.
With permission from OSU President James Halligan, Phillips has asked the Athletic Center architects to begin developing conceptual design ideas for the renovation and modernization of OSU's football stadium.
Far more than a mere facelift, the Phase II improvements to Lewis Field would consist of removing half of the north and south stands and building a brand new pre-cast concrete upper-deck structure, complete with the distinctive "OSU Brick" exterior that is used throughout the campus. The state-of-the-art stadium would tie in with the new Athletic Center to create a stunning, one-of- a-kind sports complex.
The football stadium conceptual plans include:
· Brick facade to match the Athletic Center and surrounding architecture
· West end-zone bowled in
· Upper decks on north and south side
· Up to 60 luxury skyboxes (30 on both side)
· New upper- and lower-level concourses with new ramp systems
· Upper- and lower-level restrooms, concession areas and other amenities
· New press box
· Plaza areas beneath stadium
·o Parking garage under west end of stadium
· Access to Athletic Center via concourses
The cost of the Phase II improvements has been estimated at $30-50 million, but no specific funding sources have been identified to date. However, Phillips says the Athletic Department plans to proceed with a reasonable sense of urgency in addressing the needs of the football stadium and program.
