STILLWATER, Okla - As the women's tennis team begins spring practice, there is a renewed sense of optimism for Oklahoma State as the 1999 season approaches.
In the fall, coach Majewski welcomed five players back from a squad that finished 4-19 in dual action and ninth in the Big 12 regular season standings. The remaining roster spots are filled by three true freshmen.
The Cowgirls are coming off a fall season which helped to provide the squad with something that had been lacking, a winning attitude. The success during the fall season will hopefully continue into the spring and help Oklahoma State become a force in the Big 12.
"We have added a lot of talent to this year's roster," said coach Lubicz-Majewski "if we can stay healthy there is no reason we shouldn't be one of the top four teams in the Big 12."
Sophomore Maria Galoustova looks to remain consistent for the Cowgirls at the No. 1 position. As a true freshman she led the Cowgirls with a 10-8 record in singles and teamed up with Hautova for an 11-5 doubles record. This fall she picked up right where she left off and led the team with a 10-2 record in singles play and combined with Hautova for a 6-1 doubles record.
Galoustova highlighted the fall with a flight "A" singles championship at the Hurricane Invitational, and a semifinal qualification in the Central Region tournament. Heading into spring play she is ranked sixth in the Central Region and 76th nationally
Senior Martina Hautova, a three-year letterwinner, looks to lead the Cowgirls to challenge at the top of the Big 12. Shoulder surgery cut her fall season short. Hautova should be fully recovered and ready to play when Big 12 action begins. She will look to regain her dominance and improve from last spring which saw her go 7-10 in dual action. In doubles she will team up with Galoustova. The duo combined to go 11-5 last spring.
Junior Marketa Chmelova is coming off a very impressive fall season in which she complied a 7-4 record in singles play. Highlighting her fall season was a back draw runner-up finish at the Central Region Finals in Salt Lake City.
After a 4-13 spring campaign, sophomore Cameron Stoudt showed some promise in fall action. Stoudt went 2-3 in singles and 4-2 with Chmelova in doubles. Stoudt should score for the Cowgirls at No. 6.
Senior Amy Kusch was a mid season acquisition for the Cowgirls and provided some needed depth at the bottom of the order. In fall action she went 5-2 in flight "B" singles. Kusch will provide some maturity and experience at either No. 5 or No.6.
As a true freshman Vanessa Paun came to Stillwater from Perth, Australia. During fall action she went 0-5 in singles play. "The level of play overwhelmed her at times but she showed signs of promise toward the end of fall play." said coach Lubicz-Majewski.
The Cowgirls welcome two new roster additions this spring. Ashleigh Dolman and Dominika Olszewsksa are two young European recruits for coach Lubicz-Majewski. Dolman is from London, England was the second-ranked amateur in the United Kingdom prior to coming to OSU. Dominika Olszewska from Pabianice, Poland was the singles vice-champion in Poland as a senior in high school. Both players should add some good European experience that should benefit all aspects of the Cowgirls squad.
The Cowgirls will open their season February 13-14 with a pair of in-state matches against Oklahoma City University and University of Central Oklahoma. Both matches will be held at the DuBois Center in Stillwater, but if there is inclement weather they will be held at Oaktree in Edmond.
