A Battle For Bowl Eligibility
November 22, 1999 | Cowboy Football
Nov. 22, 1999
STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State wraps up the 1999 regular season with a Thanksgiving weekend battle with Oklahoma in Norman. The stakes are clear for the Cowboys. A win gives OSU a bowl-eligible sixth win and would also give the Pokes a fourth win over their state rivals in the last five years.
Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999 2 p.m. [CST]
Memorial Stadium [72,726] Norman, Okla.

television - FOX Sports Net (National)
COWBOYS-SOONERS ON RIVALRY WEEKEND - Oklahoma State and Oklahoma are meeting on the final weekend of the regular season for the first time since 1984. It's only fitting that these long-time rivals square off in the final game. From 1944 through 1974, OSU met the Sooners on the final regular-season Saturday. Nine of those games were even played on the first Saturday in December. Since 1975, Oklahoma has been OSU's final regular-season opponent just five times.
OSU-OU NOTE - The last time the two schools played football on the Saturday after Thanksgiving was 1985. Anyone remember the Ice Bowl?
THREE WOULD BE NICE - If Oklahoma State can defeat Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon, it would mark the first time since 1988 the Cowboys closed out a regular season with three straight wins. In '88, OSU defeated Kansas, Iowa State and Texas Tech (in Tokyo) to close out the regular season and went on to defeat Wyoming in the Holiday Bowl.
ON THE ROAD - Oklahoma State will practice in Stillwater Monday through Thursday and then bus to Norman on Friday afternoon, when the Cowboys are tentatively scheduled to stage a light workout. That workout is closed to the public and media. OSU will headquarter at the Oklahoma City Marriott and return to Stillwater immediately following Saturday's game.
KICKOFF, RECORDS, ETC. - Oklahoma State heads for its regular-season finale with an overall record 5-5 and a Big 12 Conference mark of 3-4. The Cowboys have won two straight (Kansas and Baylor) and will be trying to win a third straight game for the first time this season and the first time since 1997 when the Cowboys opened with six straight wins. Oklahoma will go into its regular-season finale with an overall record of 6-4 and Big 12 record of 4-3. The Sooners are already bowl eligible and will be trying to remain unbeaten at home in 1999.
OSU-OU NOTE - In the four games vs. Oklahoma in the Bob Simmons era, Oklahoma State has outscored the Sooners 105-60. That's an average of 26.3 to 15.0.
ON RADIO - Saturday afternoon's game will be broadcast live on the 30-station Cowboy Radio Network. KWTV Sports Director Bill Teegins is the radio voice of OSU football and is joined in the booth by Tom Dirato, OSU's Coordinator of Radio and Television. The OSU Network is a division of Learfield Sports in Jefferson City, Missouri.
AND ON TV - The game will be televised live by Fox Sports Net to a national cable audience. Ron Thulin and Artie Gigantino will describe the action. It will be Oklahoma State's fifth television appearance of the season but the first since the Oct. 23 Kansas State game. OSU is 1-3 in televised games this season.
OSU-OU, FROM ONE TO 10 -
1 - The number of times Oklahoma State defeated Oklahoma between 1967 and 1995.
2 - The number of wins Bob Simmons has over the Sooners in Norman since he arrived at OSU in 1994. Simmons' Cowboys are 2-0 vs. OU on Owen Field.
3 - An Oklahoma State win Saturday would be the Cowboys' third straight over OU, and that would be a first in the history of the series.
4 - The number of different head coaches Oklahoma State has faced at OU since 1994.
5 - The number of touchdowns Oklahoma's Jerald Moore scored in a 33-14 OU win over OSU in Stillwater in 1993.
6 - The number of times since 1958 that both teams have been ranked by the Associated Press when they played each other.
7 - The number of shutout victories posted by Oklahoma State over Oklahoma in the 93-year history of the series.
8 - The jersey number of Oklahoma State's Chris Massey and Oklahoma's Brandon Daniels.
9 - The number of times since 1974 Oklahoma State has won the week before it played Oklahoma.
10 - The number to which OSU fans had to count to avoid insanity after OU's improbable win in 1983 that saw the Sooners rally from a 20-3 fourth-quarter deficit.
OSU-OU NOTE - Since 1957, three former OSU assistant coaches played for and graduated from OU. They were Bob Burris, Ken Pope and Johnny Barr.
OSU LAST WEEK - Oklahoma State recorded a 34-14 win over Baylor in Waco. The Cowboys scored all the points they would need in the first half, taking a 27-0 advantage into the halftime break. OSU's initial points were provided by kicker Tim Sydnes, who had two first-half field goals, Nathan Simmons, who scored on a three-yard run, and Terance Richardson, who scored on a 52-yard punt return. OSU's only second-half points came on a 19-yard pass from Tony Lindsay to tight end Bryan Blackwood. The OSU defense was stifling. The Cowboys allowed Baylor only 49 rushing yards on 18 attempts and limited the Bears to 37 passing yards on six of 22 attempts. OSU defenders sacked Baylor quarterbacks four times, and the Cowboys pulled in three interceptions.
OU LAST WEEK - While OSU was winning in Waco, the Sooners ran into an inspired Texas Tech squad in Lubbock. The Sooners spotted Tech a 10-0 lead but stormed back to take a 21-10 lead early in the second quarter. After leading 21-13 at halftime, Texas Tech scored 25 unanswered second-half points to put the game away. Oklahoma quarterback Josh Heupel passed for 352 yards, completing 32 of 52 tosses, and threw one interception. Quenton Griffin had 10 carries for 58 yards to lead the Oklahoma ground attack.
93 AND COUNTING - Oklahoma State and Oklahoma have met 93 times previously in a series that dates back to 1904. According to the 1999 NCAA Football Records Book, the OSU-OU rivalry equals the 22nd most-played in Division I-A. There are four other rivalries with 93 previous games, including LSU-Tulane, Georgia-Georgia Tech, Nebraska-Iowa State and Texas-Oklahoma. Minnesota and Wisconsin have the longest ongoing rivalry with 108 games.
UPDATING THE 1999 OPPOSITION - Oklahoma State's 1999 opponents have a combined record of 67-54 going into this weekend's play. Two OSU opponents have just one loss on the season and seven of the 11 are at .500 or better through 10 weeks of the regular season.

OSU OPPONENTS RANKED - The difficulty of Oklahoma State's 1999 schedule is also reflected in the number of Cowboy opponents included in the national rankings. This week (Nov. 21) alone, five previous OSU opponents are ranked in the top 25 with three of those foes ranked in the top 12. According to this week's Associated Press Poll, Nebraska is fourth, Texas sixth and Kansas State ninth. Texas A&M is ranked 17th this week, and Mississippi State is 19th. You have to look all the way back to 1976 to find a season with comparable rankings for OSU opponents. That season, OSU foes Kansas (8), Oklahoma (5), Missouri (10) and Nebraska (9) were all ranked in the top 10 in the country. The 1976 season also saw the Pokes play No. 12 Arkansas and No. 14 Iowa State.
HEAD COACH BOB SIMMONS - Oklahoma State's head football coach is 10 games into his fifth season and will be coaching his 57th OSU game when the Cowboys face Oklahoma this week. Coach Simmons will bring a career mark of 27-29 into Saturday's game. Simmons came to Oklahoma State from Colorado, where he was assistant head coach for Bill McCartney. He guided OSU to a bowl game just three years into his tenure and was the 1997 Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year.
MILESTONES UNDER SIMMONS - Oklahoma State's football fortunes have soared since Simmons became the school's 20th head coach on Dec. 4, 1994. Below are just a few of those milestones.
- When OSU defeated Texas Tech 41-21 this season, it was the first win over
the Red Raiders since 1988, snapping a four-game losing streak.
- OSU registered its first win under Coach Simmons on Sept. 16, 1995, when
the Cowboys upended Southwest Missouri State 35-7 on Lewis Field.
- When Simmons led the Cowboys to a 30-26 win over Missouri at Columbia on
Oct. 21, 1995, it snapped a 20-game winless streak in conference play.
- Two weeks after defeating Missouri at Columbia, the Cowboys defeated
Oklahoma at Norman. It was OSU's first win over its in-state rival since
1976 and was a signal of things to come. O-State has defeated Oklahoma in
three of the four meetings since Simmons became head coach.
- When Oklahoma State won at Iowa State in the 1997 season opener, it would
be the start of a six-game winning streak and help guide the Cowboys to
their first bowl season since 1988. OSU would win its first six games of the
season, including back-to-back wins over Texas and Colorado.
- Since overtime became vogue in college football in 1996, Oklahoma State
has had more than its share of extra-period contests. Under Simmons, the
Cowboys have gone into overtime four times, including a two-overtime
thriller at Texas A&M two years ago.
- Since Bob Simmons took over the OSU reins in 1995, the Cowboys have faced
17 teams that were nationally ranked going into the game. Eight of those
opponents were ranked in the top 10 when they faced Oklahoma State. In the
last two seasons, Oklahoma State has defeated three opponents (Texas and
Colorado in 1997 and Mississippi State in 1998) that were nationally ranked.
- Under Bob Simmons, Oklahoma State is 10-0 against nonconference
competition on Lewis Field and 12-6 vs. nonleague opposition overall.

POKES WIN AT HOME - Oklahoma State wrapped up its fourth straight season with a winning record on Lewis Field. The Cowboys were 4-2 in 1999 with wins over Louisiana-Lafayette, Tulsa, Texas Tech and Kansas. OSU has been 4-2 at home each season since 1996. The Pokes were 1-4 at home in 1995, meaning OSU has a 17-12 home record in the Bob Simmons era.
Noting the Cowboys
T-RICH GETS SINGLE-SEASON MARK - Senior Terance Richardson needed just one punt return yard against Baylor last week to equal R.W. McQuarters' single-season punt return yardage mark at Oklahoma State. Richardson got that and a little more. The explosive returner, who deserves postseason recognition, had three returns for 58 yards. He got 52 of those yards on one return that also went for his first career return touchdown. For the season, Richardson now has 578 yards on 36 returns. That's an average of 16.1 per return.

RICHARDSON SHATTERS RECORD - Terance Richardson used an outstanding day against Kansas two weeks ago to establish a new Oklahoma State career record for punt return yardage and, he continues to add to that number. His three returns for 58 yards against Baylor on Saturday gives him 64 career returns for 890 yards, 103 yards ahead of the second-best career number of 787 by Bennie Goodwin.

BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK, AGAIN - For a second straight week, Richardson has been named the Big 12 Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week. He won the award a week ago after a big day against Kansas. He captured the spotlight again this week by returning three punts for 58 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown against Baylor.
EVEN MORE ON RICHARDSON - Not only has Richardson continued to dazzle the league with his punt returns, he has established himself as one of OSU's all-time leading receivers. His two catches and 24 yards against Baylor give him 86 career receptions for 1,125 career yards. He moved past Terry Brown into 11th place on the all-time OSU receiving list and is just 20 yards from moving past Gerald Bain into the all-time top 10.

HOWELL LOOKS FOR 500 - Senior wide receiver Ethan Howell, who eclipsed the 400-yard mark earlier this year against Texas, needs just 35 yards this week against Oklahoma to move into even more elite territory. He would become the 21st player in Oklahoma State history to have 500 or more receiving yards in a single season. Hart Lee Dykes has the all-time record of 1,278 and is still the only OSU receiver to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark.

10 STRAIGHT - Howell has caught at least one pass in each of Oklahoma State's 10 regular season games in 1999. If he can catch at least one pass this week against Oklahoma, he will become the first Cowboy receiver to have at least one catch in all 11 games since Rafael Denson in 1994.
ALL-PURPOSE FOBBS - Junior Jamaal Fobbs has proven to be a triple threat for Oklahoma State in 1999. Through 10 games, Fobbs is OSU's leading rusher with 523 yards on 100 carries. He has also caught 17 passes for 178 yards and has returned 23 kickoffs for 508 yards. He leads the Cowboys in all-purpose yardage with 1,209, an average of 120.9 per game.
THE RETURNS ARE IN - With one game to play in 1999, Fobbs is No. 4 on the single-season kickoff return yards list with 508. He trails R.W. McQuarters' school-record 645 by 137 yards. He already has the sixth-best single-season effort at Oklahoma State. Additionally, Fobbs needs just two returns against OU this week to equal the single-season record for number of returns. The record is currently 25 by Curtis Mayfield.

FOBBS, SIMMONS ON THE CAREER LIST - With 523 yards through 10 games this season, Jamaal Fobbs now has 1,792 yards for his OSU career. He will go into this week's game against Oklahoma 18th on the career rushing list. Fobbs needs 48 yards to move past Jim Dillard into 17th place on the list. Simmons, who returned this season after major knee surgery, has 1,981 career yards and is 14th on the all-time list. He needs just 19 more yards to become the 13th player in OSU history to rush for 2,000 or more yards in a career.

LINDSAY HAS BEST DAY - Junior quarterback Tony Lindsay, who has battled back from an early-season knee injury, had the best day of his season against Baylor on Saturday. Lindsay passed for 217 yards and a touchdown in the 34-14 win over the Bears in Waco. Lindsay's previous best was 155 yards against Texas on Lewis Field. Lindsay started the season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette but suffered a knee injury in the second quarter. He returned to the lineup five games later against Kansas State when he passed for 130 yards and a touchdown.
TIGHT ENDS COME THROUGH - Oklahoma State's talented tight ends came through again in the win over Baylor. Marcellus Rivers led all receivers with 68 yards on four catches. Junior Bryan Blackwood, a junior college All-American last season at NEO, had two catches for 28 yards and his first OSU touchdown.
SPEAKING OF MARCELLUS - Rivers is finishing the 1999 regular season with a flourish. He has caught at least one pass in each of OSU's last seven games and has at least one reception in all but one (Mississippi State) game this season. His four touchdowns lead all OSU receivers and equal his 1998 total.
DBs STEP UP - Oklahoma State's defensive backs have combined for 10 interceptions through 10 regular season games. That's one more than OSU's D-backs came up with a year ago and the most since 1997 when the Cowboy defensive backs had 13 total interceptions. Alvin Porter and J.B. Flowers lead the 1999 defense with three interceptions each.
SYDNES LOOKING FOR TOP FIVE - Senior kicker Tim Sydnes will go into the final regular season game on the verge of moving into the top five of all-time scorers at Oklahoma State. Sydnes has 264 career points and that is just two points behind Thurman Thomas, who had 266 during his dazzling OSU career. Should Sydnes crack the top five, three of the top five would be kickers. OSU's top all-time scorers are at right.
NOTE-ING THE POKES - Tim Sydnes' 48-yard field goal in the first quarter against Baylor was his longest of the season. Sydnes has now kicked at least one field goal in seven of OSU's 10 games in 1999 ... J.B. Flowers' interception in the first quarter at Waco was his third of the season and third of his OSU career ... When Tony Lindsay hit Gabe Lindsay for a one-yard gain in the third quarter, it was the first brother-to-brother connection of their OSU careers ... Freshman defensive back Chris Massey came up with his first career interception against Baylor at Waco.
This Week's Opponent ... Oklahoma
THE SERIES - Saturday will mark the 94th meeting between Oklahoma State and Oklahoma, and the Sooners have dominated. OU has won 72 games while Oklahoma State has claimed 14 wins, and there have been seven ties. The series began in 1904 with a 75-0 Oklahoma win, and that win was indicative of the early years of the rivalry. Oklahoma State didn't score a point on its cross-state rivals in the first eight games of the series, and the Cowboys didn't defeat Oklahoma until 1917 by a 9-0 margin in Oklahoma City.
IN NORMAN - The two teams will be meeting in Norman for the 45th time, and Oklahoma has a 34-7-3 advantage. Oklahoma State has enjoyed some success of late against the Sooners in Norman. In fact, Oklahoma has not defeated Oklahoma State on Owen Field since 1993, when the Sooners recorded a 31-0 shutout. OSU won by a 12-0 margin in 1995, and the Cowboys took a 30-7 victory in 1997.
LAST YEAR - Tony Lindsay rushed for two touchdowns and passed for two others as the Cowboys raced to a 41-26 win over the Sooners on Lewis Field. It was Oklahoma State's first win over the Sooners in Stillwater since 1966 and the most points the Cowboys had scored against OU since 1945. Oklahoma led 10-7 at halftime, but the Cowboys responded in the second half by scoring 21 third-quarter points and 13 points in the fourth.
THE COACHES - Bob Simmons will be facing Oklahoma for the fifth time as a collegiate head coach. Simmons is 3-1 against Oklahoma and is 2-0 against the Sooners in Norman. Oklahoma's only victory over a Bob Simmons-coached team came in 1996 when the Sooners claimed a 27-17 win in Stillwater. Bob Stoops is in his first season at Oklahoma. While Stoops has no record as a head coach against Oklahoma State, he was part of the staff at Kansas State that was 6-1 against OSU between 1989 and 1995.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING - Here's a look at how OSU and Oklahoma match up statistically. National and Big 12 rankings are listed where appropriate.

OSU-OU MEMORIES - Any series with a 93-game history has its share of >memories. Despite an obvious domination by Oklahoma, this series has produced more than its share of bizarre moments and great games. A sample follows.
Nov. 5, 1904 - The first-ever meeting between the two schools is now noted for a bizarre play in which the ball wound up in a creek and Ed Cook from OU swam 10 yards for a touchdown. The game was played in Guthrie with OU winning 75-0. It sort of leaves you wondering why the creek wasn't considered outside the sideline boundary. That would have made the aquatic escapades humorous but meaningless.
Nov. 6, 1914 - After eight years of not scoring on Oklahoma, OAMC fans had something to celebrate. Clay Woodson scored OAMC's first touchdown against the Sooners in the 1914 game in Norman.
Nov. 8, 1922 - When John F. Maulbetsch was hired as OSU's football coach in 1921, he was quoted as saying "I'll beat OU for you in two years." He eventually did beat the Sooners four years into his regime, but on this day in 1922, the two teams played to a 3-3 tie in a homecoming game in Stillwater.
Nov. 25, 1944 - With scouts from both the Cotton and Sugar Bowls looking on, Oklahoma State upended the Sooners 28-6. It was the most lopsided OSU win over OU in the series to that date. OSU players were told just before the game that Athletics Director Henry Iba had already accepted a bid to play in the Cotton Bowl.
Nov. 24, 1945 - Eighth-ranked Oklahoma State routed the Sooners 47-0 in Norman. To this day, the 1945 victory represents the most lopsided by OSU over the Sooners and the most points the Cowboys have scored against Oklahoma. One day later, the Cowboys accepted a bid to play St. Mary's in the Sugar Bowl. The win in New Orleans on New Year's Day would cap what most would agree was the most dazzling two years in OSU football history to date.
Nov. 30, 1946 - The Sooners took out two years of frustration on the Cowboys by a 73-12 score on Lewis Field. The Cowboys entered the 1946 season being touted for the Rose Bowl and riding a 19-game winning streak.
Dec. 4, 1965 - Oklahoma State ended 19 years of frustration with a 17-16 win over the Sooners in Norman. Charley Durkee hit a 35-yard field goal with 1:41 to play to give the Pokes the winning margin.
Dec. 3, 1966 - Another one-point thriller provided OSU with back-to-back wins over the Sooners. OSU led 15-8 when Oklahoma's Ron Shotts scored to cut the margin to 15-14. The Sooners went for two with quarterback Bobby Warmack passing to Shotts, who was tackled short of the goal line.
Oct. 23, 1976 - Terry Miller raced to a 72-yard touchdown on the third play of the game, and Oklahoma State went on to record a 31-24 win over fifth-ranked Oklahoma on Owen Field. OSU led 10-0 before Oklahoma rallied to take a 21-13 halftime lead. The Cowboys put OU away in the second half on a touchdown by Skip Taylor and a five-yard pass from Charlie Weatherbie to Ricky Taylor.
Oct. 15, 1983 - One of the most improbable Oklahoma wins in the long series. OSU led 20-3 late in the fourth quarter only to watch the Sooners rally for a 21-20 win. The game is most noted for the on-side kick that his OSU's Chris Rockins in the headgear and bounced into the arms of Scott Case. That play led to OU's game-winning field goal.
Nov. 24, 1984 - Probably the most important game ever played between the two state rivals. Oklahoma State was ranked second by UPI and third by AP. Oklahoma was ranked second by AP and third by UPI. The game would go to the Sooners by 10, and it featured the usual unusual, like a controversial fumbled punt by OSU and an official who stopped the clock at the end of the half just long enough for OSU's Rusty Hilger to get his team to the line and get off a pass that wound up in the arms of Jamie Harris for a game-tying touchdown.
Nov. 30, 1985 - Completing what might have been the craziest three years in the history of the series, the teams met in Stillwater in what is now call the "Ice Bowl." Oklahoma won 13-0 on an ice-covered Lewis Field. Legend has it that because the precipitation started as rain before turning to sleet, some fans were actually stuck to their seats at game's end.
Nov. 5, 1988 - The two teams battled on Lewis Field in front of a national ESPN audience. Oklahoma won the game 31-28 when a wide-open Brent Parker couldn't hang on to a Mike Gundy pass in the end zone. The game was important in Barry Sanders' run to the '88 Heisman Trophy. It was the first national television exposure of the season for Sanders, and he responded by rushing for 215 yards and two touchdowns.
Nov. 11, 1995 - Bob Simmons' first trip to Norman as OSU's head football coach was a memorable one. The Cowboys posted a 12-0 shutout win, breaking an 18-year winless streak against the Sooners.
Nov. 8, 1997 - Oklahoma State's most recent trip to Owen Field resulted in a 30-7 Cowboy victory. After OU took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, Oklahoma State reeled off 30 unanswered points. Jamaal Fobbs led all rushers with 122 yards on 25 carries, and Tony LIndsay passed for 129 yards and two touchdowns.
