Dr. Val Gene Iven returned to his alma mater as Head Team Physician in 2007 and has since also served as Oklahoma State’s Director of Sports Medicine. Entering his 19th year at OSU, he holds the second longest tenure among Head Team Physicians in the Big 12. He enters his 32nd year as an NCAA Head Team Physician.

A 1984 graduate of Oklahoma State, Iven attended medical school at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center where he completed a Family Medicine Residency and was later chosen as the first Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellow in the program’s now 30-plus year history.

Dr. Iven served as the Head Team Physician at the University of Tennessee after he completed his Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship – and served the Volunteers for 13 years. Upon his arrival in Knoxville, he was the youngest Head Team Physician in the SEC – and when he departed, he was the dean of the SEC’s East Division Head Team Physicians.

At OSU, Dr. Iven has served as the NCAA Athletic Healthcare Administrator since 2014. He has been an active member of the Big 12 Head Team Physician’s Medical Advisory Committee – and played a critical role in both the Big 12 and OSU’s COVID response. Dr. Iven coordinated the Oklahoma State Athletic Department COVID Medical Advisory team and was also a member of the Big 12 COVID Medical Advisory team as well as Big 12 COVID subcommittees for men’s basketball, wrestling and baseball. He currently serves on the Big 12 Football Medical Observer and transfer portal subcommitties.

During his career at both Tennessee and Oklahoma State, Dr. Iven has served as the Head Team Physician for 10 national championship teams across six different sports, 30 football bowl teams, more than 30 Big 12 Championship teams, more than 30 Olympians, and more than 500 All-Americans. Dr. Iven has been recognized by Top Doctor magazine with its family medicine award since 2014 and sports medicine specialist award since 2015. He has been awarded status as a 25-year member of the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine and holds a CAQ in Sports Medicine. He has achieved Fellow status of the American Academy of Family Medicine and has been a member of the American College of Sports Medicine and Oklahoma Academy of Family Medicine. He has been a member of the US Olympic Sports Medicine Society and has served both at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado and at the Goodwill Games in New York City.

Iven has co-authored several sports medicine journal articles and is a frequent sports medicine lecturer across the country. Throughout his career, he has volunteered to teach numerous undergraduate aspiring medical students, active medical students, medical residents and sports medicine fellows.

He and his wife, the former Angela Hight, have a daughter, Austyn, who was a 2014 graduate of Oklahoma State University and a member of the Cowgirls Basketball team, as well as a son, Carson, who graduated in 2023 from Oklahoma State and was a four-year student manager for Cowboy basketball.
