Mark Mitchell
- Title:
- Strength & Conditioning Coach
Mark Mitchell is in his third season as Oklahoma State’s strength and conditioning coach, tasked with helping Cowboy student-athletes achieve peak performance on the court by enhancing their athletic ability and minimizing injury risk.
Mitchell joined Mike Boynton Jr.’s OSU’s staff in August of 2021 after a five-year stay at SMU (2016-21) where he helped the Mustangs win an American Athletic Conference regular season and tournament title with trips to both the NCAA tournament and the NIT.
At SMU, Mitchell worked with 11 All-AAC selections, including 2017 conference player of the year Semi Ojeleye. Five of his former players – Ojeleye, Sterling Brown, Shake Milton, Feron Hunt and Kendric Davis – went on to play in the NBA and several others have moved on to professional careers overseas.
Prior to SMU, Mitchell served as the director of strength and conditioning at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas, where he worked alongside Boynton (then an assistant coach). The Lumberjacks swept the Southland Conference regular season and tournament titles in all three seasons with a combined 89-14 record and scored first round NCAA tournament upsets over No. 5 VCU (2014) and No. 3 West Virginia (2016).
Before joining SFA, Mitchell was a graduate assistant at Western Michigan, serving as first assistant to head football strength and conditioning coach Nate Peoples (now a member of the OSU football staff) while handling day-to-day work with the men’s tennis team.
In 2010, Mitchell completed internships with the Ohio State football strength and conditioning staff (May 2010-Aug. 2010) and the Eastern Michigan sports performance staff (Jan. 2010- April 2010).
Mitchell is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a Strength and Conditioning Certified Coach (SCCC) through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association. He also has a certification in Applied Functional Sciences (CAFS) from the Gray Institute of Applied Functional Science.
Mitchell was a three-year letter-winning defensive back at Eastern Michigan, where he earned his bachelors of science in sports medicine with a specialization in exercise science in 2010. He added his masters of arts in coaching sport performance from Western Michigan in 2012.
Mitchell and his wife, Shannon, have a son, Lennox.
