Larry Blunt brings a resume filled with collegiate and international coaching expertise to the Oklahoma State coaching staff after joining in the summer of 2021.
In his first season with the Cowboys, Blunt helped the Cowboys to a 15-15 record in which they took down No. 1 Baylor in Waco, the first time in program history Oklahoma State defeated the top-ranked team in the country on the road.
Playing in the nation’s toughest conference, OSU finished fifth in the Big 12 for the second-straight season. It marked the first time the Cowboys finished the season in the top-5 of the Big 12 standings back-to-back years since 2005.
As a team, the Pokes posted the fourth-best adjusted efficiency defense in the country last season, alongside the seventh-best block percentage and held teams to the ninth-lowest two-point shooting percentage, according to KenPom.
For the 2022-23 season, Blunt will serve as a player development coordinator for the post players.
Blunt, who was instrumental in the founding of Orangeville Prep in Ontario, Canada, arrived in Stillwater having spent three seasons at Drake, where he helped the Bulldogs win at least 20 games each year and raise the 2019 Missouri Valley championship trophy.
He joined Drake after spending two seasons as an assistant at Canisius, where he helped guide the Golden Griffins to a share of the Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular season title with a 15-3 conference record and an overall mark of 21-12. The league title was the program’s first since 1993-94 and the 21 wins equaled the school record for regular season wins.
Blunt enjoyed three seasons as the head coach at Orangeville Prep in Mono, Ontario, where he had the opportunity to work with numerous student-athletes that went on to earn Division I scholarships and/or play professionally.
“Coach Blunt is an outstanding addition to our staff,” Boynton said. “His experience as an assistant at both Canisius and Drake, in addition to his experience running his own program, gives me great confidence that he is ready to help us on our journey to build a champion in Stillwater. LB has recruited, developed, and coached some elite talent in his time coaching and has the ‘Let’s Work’ mentality as he comes in the door. I’m excited to welcome him and Morgan to the Cowboy basketball family.”
In three years as the head coach at Orangeville Prep, Blunt had 30 players who earned a Division I scholarship and six NBA players. Two of which, Jamal Murray and Thon Maker, were selected seventh and ninth, respectively, in the 2016 NBA Draft.
Blunt began his basketball coaching career in 2005-06 at Eastern Mennonite, a Division III school in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The Courtland, Va., native spent the next two seasons on staff at Shaw University, a Division II program located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Blunt moved on to join the coaching staff at Hampden-Sydney College from 2008-12.
Blunt moved to Canada in 2012 and took over as the head coach for the Oshawa Power of the National Basketball League of Canada. During the 2012-13 season, he helped lead the Power to a franchise-record for victories in a season.
As a student-athlete, Blunt earned two varsity letters in football at Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, N.C., before transferring to James Madison, where he completed his collegiate football career playing for the Dukes, helping the team to an NCAA I-AA National Championship.
He earned his degree in public administration from James Madison in 2005 and earned a masters in sport administration from Canisius.
His wife, Morgan, and his daughter, Layla, live in Stillwater.
