March 03, 2026 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State held on to beat Missouri State by a score of 8-7 Tuesday night at O'Brate Stadium to extend its winning streak to eight.
Colin Brueggemann delivered the biggest hit of the night, smashing a grand slam that changed the game in the fifth inning. Garrett Shull also homered in the contest as Brueggemann and Shull drove in six of the Cowboys' eight runs.
Noah Wech worked two shutout innings to pick up his third save of the season. Brennan Phillips earned the win in relief after throwing 1 1/3 innings and allowing just one hit.
Kai Fyke made the start for the Cowboys, pitching 3 2/3 innings and striking out four while giving up three runs, two earned.
Alex Conover led off the first inning with a walk and stole second base for his fourth steal of the season. After a balk, Campbell Smithwick singled to left field to give the Pokes a 1-0 lead.
Fyke had to navigate some trouble in the second inning, with a leadoff error allowing Logan Fyffe to reach first. Fyke recorded two outs but allowed an RBI single that tied the game at 1-1.
Fyke retired the first two batters in the top of the third before allowing a two-out single to Curry Sutherland. The next hitter, Fyffe, blooped a single into right field, and Sutherland rounded third trying to score but was thrown out at the plate by center fielder Danny Wallace to keep the game tied.
The Bears put together a big inning in the fourth, scoring twice on four hits to take a 3-1 lead. For Fyke, it was his first earned runs of the game and the first earned runs allowed by Cowboy pitching in 32 2/3 innings.
The Pokes got one back in the bottom of the inning, which started with Danny Wallace beating out an infield single. Wallace then went first-to-home on a double laced by TP Wentworth to cut the lead to 3-2.
Phillips replaced Fyke to get out of the fourth inning and stayed in to pitch a scoreless fifth.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, three-straight Cowboys reached via walk. With the bases loaded, Brueggemann lifted a ball to the opposite field over the wall for a grand slam to flip the score to 6-3. It was Brueggemann's second homer of the season and 10th RBI.
Stormy Rhodes entered for the Cowboys in the sixth inning and worked a scoreless inning while striking out a pair.
Terrance Bowen led off the bottom of the sixth with a double to deep left field, and Shull followed suit with a two-run home run to put the Pokes ahead 8-3.
Missouri State got back into the game with a big seventh inning, scoring four runs to cut the lead to one. The runs were allowed by Rhodes, Drew Blake and Drew Winslow before Bryce Leblanc entered and got the Cowboys out of the inning.
Wech took the mound in the eighth and hit the first batter he saw before retiring three in a row. He returned for the ninth and retired the side, striking out the final hitter of the game to shut the door on the Bears.
The Cowboys will host Gardner-Webb for a three-game series this weekend, with first pitch for Friday's opener scheduled for 6 p.m.
