Cowboy Wrestling Cruises Over No. 13 Northern Iowa
January 30, 2026 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – The No. 5 Oklahoma State wrestling team defeated No. 13 Northern Iowa, 34-3, on Friday night inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The Cowboys took nine of 10 bouts, collecting bonus points in four of them. The win improves the Cowboys to 11-1 on the season and 6-0 in the Big 12, while the loss drops the Panthers to 9-5 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Over the past three dual meets against Oklahoma, Missouri and Northern Iowa, the Cowboys have outscored their opponents 104-6, dropping just two bouts in those duals.
"I just think there's an expectation and standard of what we're working towards," head coach David Taylor said. "We're not just trying to win duals; we're not trying to just beat teams. We are trying to dominate people, and we are trying to continue to get better and separate ourselves. That's for the benefit of the team and individuals here. I think a lot of the guys can leave with improvements from this. We just have to keep getting better, and we have a really great test on Sunday. I'm looking forward to seeing our team go out and wrestle. It's going to be a really good opportunity for us."
In the lone top-10 matchup of the night, No. 2 Dee Lockett (165) trailed No. 6 Ryder Downey, 4-1, with under 10 seconds to go in the bout. Lockett rallied to pick up the match-tying takedown and coupled it with a pair of near-fall points to move to 10-0 on the season. The win is Lockett's fifth ranked win and fourth top-10 victory.
The reigning Big 12 Wrestler of the Week, No. 7 Alex Facundo (174), also collected his fifth ranked win of the season over No. 12 Jared Simma. Facundo has now won three consecutive bouts against top-15 foes.
133-pounder Jax Forrest improved to 7-0 in his collegiate career, after his technical fall win over No. 25 Julian Farber. In Forrest's seven collegiate matches, he has six bonus-point wins with the lone non-bonus-point win coming against a U23 World Champion.
At heavyweight, No. 6 Konner Doucet pinned Grant Stromberg in the third period for his seventh-consecutive win. With the victory, Doucet set his single-season career-high in wins by fall.
Other true freshmen No. 2 Sergio Vega (141) and No. 6 Landon Robideau cruised to major decision victories over their respective opponents. The win improves Vega's flawless collegiate record to 11-0, and he's yet to surrender a takedown.
No. 12 Casey Swiderski (149) picked up his second ranked win as a Cowboy over No. 32 Caleb Rathjen. Swiderski has now won nine of his past 10 contests after opening his career as a Cowboy 0-4.
197-pounder No. 7 Cody Merrill improved to 11-1 this season after his 2-0 win over Carson Babcock. Merrill's opponents have failed to record a point on him in each of the last three contests.
The Cowboys' lead-off man, No. 7 Troy Spratley (125), collected his seventh-straight win with a 6-1 decision over No. 32 Trever Anderson.
The lone Cowboy loss came at 184 pounds, where No. 8 Zack Ryder dropped his match to Nick Fox in sudden victory.
The Cowboys are back in action on Sunday, February 1 at 2 p.m. against No. 3 Iowa State in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Fans can watch the match on ESPN+.
