HOUSTON – Oklahoma State's late comeback bid came up short as the Cowgirls dropped a 3-2 contest to Rice Thursday night at Holloway Field.
With the loss, the Cowgirls fell to 2-2-1, while Rice is now 3-1-0.
Sonora DeFini and Jazmin Brown found the back of the net for OSU, while Taryn Thibeau recorded assists on each score. Both goals came off corner kicks.
OSU finished with an 18-14 advantage in shots, including outshooting the Owls by a 14-4 margin in the second half. The Cowgirls also owned an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Cowgirls took the game's initial lead in the 17th minute on DeFini's first-career goal. Thibeau delivered a corner kick into the middle of the box that DeFini headed to the post from six-yards out.
OSU's lead did not last long, however, as just over two minutes later, the Owls recorded the equalizer. After being awarded a penalty kick, Rice's Leah Chancey stepped up and delivered a shot that was saved by a diving Logan Marks. But Chancey was able to pounce on the rebound and convert that chance to make the score 1-1.
The Owls would get a late goal to take a lead into the break. After a shot in the 43rd minute by Camille Quarterman was saved but not secured, Allie Love was there to send in the rebound for a 2-1 advantage.
Rice struck quickly out of the break, taking a 3-1 lead in the 49th minute when yet another saved shot was sent in on the rebound attempt; this time it was Piper Biziorek finding the back of the net.
OSU had numerous chances at an equalizer and several near misses late. In the 80th minute, an Xcaret Pineda free kick deflected off the defensive wall and caromed off the post, and the ensuing corner kick resulted in a header that sailed just over the bar.
Just minutes later, another attempt off a free kick by Pineda carried wide of the mark.
OSU returns to action Sunday when the Cowgirls host No. 17 Mississippi State at Neal Patterson Stadium. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
