STILLWATER – Oklahoma State distance runner Brian Musau was named as a semifinalist for The Bowerman Award, bestowed to collegiate track & field's top male and female athlete for the year.
Musau is one of nine semifinalists for the award, with each semifinalist listed below alongside their respective event(s):
Mykolas Alekna, California (Discus)
Jordan Anthony, Arkansas (Sprints)
James Corrigan, BYU (Mid-Distance/Steeple)
Nathaniel Ezekiel, Baylor (Sprints/Hurdles)
Ishmael Kipkurui, New Mexico (Distance)
Carlie Makarawu, Kentucky (Sprints)
Ralford Mullings, Oklahoma (Throws)
Brian Musau, Oklahoma State (Distance)
Ethan Strand, North Carolina (Mid-Distance/Distance)
Ja'Kobe Tharp, Auburn (Hurdles)
Musau is the second Bowerman Semifinalist in program history, joining Cowboy Olympian and NCAA Champion thrower Nick Miller, who was on the list in 2016. German Fernandez so far remains the only Cowboy to be named as a finalist for the inaugural award in 2009 following his NCAA title in the 1,500 Meters. Semifinalists were not named until 2010.
The Cowboy sophomore completed one of the best athletic seasons in Oklahoma State history, claiming his third career NCAA title and second national title of the athletic year in the 5,000 Meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships earlier this month. He defended his NCAA indoor title in the 5K with another dominant performance at the outdoor championships, taking the lead with 400 meters to go and fending off late challenges from Villanova's Marco Langon and New Mexico's Habtom Samuel.
For his performances on the track this season, Musau was named USTFCCCA Midwest Region Indoor and Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year and is now a Bowerman Semifinalist for the first time. The selection committee will be announcing the men's finalists on July 8, with subsequent fan voting taking place July 8-10. Winners will be announced December 18 at the USTFCCCA Convention in Grapevine, Texas.
