STILLWATER – Nolan Schubart's go-ahead home run in the bottom of the eighth propelled Oklahoma State to the win in game one of midweek series against Winthrop Tuesday as the Cowboys pushed their winning streak to three with a 3-2 victory at O'Brate Stadium.
With the win, the 14th-ranked Cowboys improved to 7-4, while the Eagles fell to 7-5.
Schubart led the Cowboys offensively, going 3-for-4 with a double and the game-winning home run. Aidan Meola followed suit with a 2-for-3 showing that included his first homer of the season.
Drew Blake earned the win, retiring the only batter he faced to end the eighth and improve to 1-1, while Sean Youngerman picked up his second save by working a perfect ninth and striking out a pair.
OSU jumped out to an early lead in the second inning on Meola's bomb, a 421-foot shot to left field.
That held up until the fifth when the Eagles touched OSU starter Mario Pesca for a pair of runs on three hits, with Jaylen Hernandez' two-RBI single giving the visitors a 2-1 advantage. Pesca finished the game with six strikeouts in five innings of work.
OSU tied the game in the seventh. Following back-to-back singles by Colin Brueggemann and Meola, a sacrifice bunt put Cowboys in scoring position. Pinch hitter Ian Daugherty would bring home the tying run on a groundout.
With the score knotted at 2-2 and two outs in the eighth, Schubart lifted a high fly ball that carried into the bullpen in right field. The homer was his second of the season.
OSU continues its five-game homestand and closes out the Winthrop series tomorrow at 4 p.m. before welcoming Illinois State for a weekend series starting Friday.
