Cowboy Baseball Drops Series Opener
March 28, 2025 | Cowboy Baseball
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Oklahoma State fell to Kansas, 5-2, in Friday night's series opener at Hoglund Ballpark.
With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 12-11 overall and 1-4 in Big 12 play, while KU is now 21-6 and 4-3 in the league
Brayden Smith homered and extended his hitting streak to 10 games, but the Pokes managed just three hits and struck out 10 times against KU right-hander Dominic Voegele, who worked eight innings and improved to 4-2.
Harrison Bodendorf took the loss to fall to 5-1 as the southpaw worked five innings and allowed three runs on six hits while picking up five strikeouts.
KU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in its first at bat on Brady Ballinger's eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left-center field.
Bodendorf put up zeroes over the next four frames, but in the sixth, an infield single to lead off the inning would come home to score after a hit batter, a sacrifice bunt and a groundout.
Trailing 3-0 after six, the Cowboys finally got on the scoreboard when Smith smashed a solo home run over the wall in right field. The round tripper was Smith's sixth of the season, with five of those coming during his current hitting streak.
KU added its final runs in the eighth on a solo homer by Michael Brooks and a bases-loaded walk to take a 5-1 advantage.
The Cowboys mounted a rally in their final at bat. Alex Conover led off the ninth with his first-career home run, an opposite-field shot to right that knocked Voegele from the game.
Following a single and a walk, OSU brought the tying run to the plate with nobody out. But Smith struck out, and Colin Brueggemann grounded into a game-ending double play.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 2 p.m.
