SALT LAKE CITY – Oklahoma State picked up its first conference win of the season Saturday, defeating Utah, 5-4, at Smith's Ballpark.
With the win, the Cowboys improved to 11-9 overall and 1-2 in the Big 12, while Utah is now 12-9 and 1-4 in the league. The two teams will square off in Sunday's rubber game at 2 p.m. (CDT).
Harrison Bodendorf picked up another win on the mound to improve to 5-0. The southpaw worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out four.
The trio of Mario Pesca, Ryan Ure and Sean Youngerman allowed just one run over the final 3 2/3 innings. Pesca worked two shutout frames, Ure struck out the only batter he faced and Youngerman recorded the final four outs to pick up his third save.
Offensively, Alex Conover went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Nolan Schubart homered and drove in three runs.
OSU jumped out to a lead in its first at bat. Conover opened the game with a double to right-center field, and Kollin Ritchie would later bring him home with a sacrifice fly.
But the Utes answered in the bottom of the first when Tyler Quinn brought home the tying run on a fielder's choice.
Utah would take its first lead in the third, getting a solo home run from Core Jackson to go up, 2-1.
That lead did not last long, however. Brock Thompson led off the fifth with a double, and two batters later, an RBI single from Conover tied the score. After another single, Schubart demolished a three-run home run to right field, his fifth round tripper of the season, to put the Pokes up, 5-2.
The Utes trimmed their deficit to two in the sixth and had two runners on with just one out, but Pesca came out of the OSU bullpen and escaped further damage.
In the bottom of the ninth, a leadoff double came home to score after two groundouts, and UU brought the winning run to the plate following an infield single before another groundout ended the game.
