Cowboy Wrestling Claims Three Titles at Cougar Clash
December 07, 2025 | Cowboy Wrestling
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Oklahoma State wrestlers Alex Facundo, Ronnie Ramirez and Zack Ryder secured titles at their respective weight classes at the Cougar Clash at First Community Arena on Sunday.
"It was a good weekend," coach David Taylor said. "I thought we learned a lot today. We were able to get a lot of guys a lot of matches. We scored some points, made some mistakes and now we know we've got some areas to improve in."
Along with the three champions, the Cowboys had a pair of runner-ups, three third-place finishers and five others placed inside the top eight. The Cougar Clash field included No. 9 Illinois, No. 12 Missouri, No. 16 Northern Iowa, No. 22 Little Rock, Brown, SIUE, and Northern Colorado.
True freshman Ramirez claimed the first title for the Cowboys at 133 pounds, going 4-0 on the day with wins over No. 14 Julian Farber, Garret Rinken, Jackson Tucker and Joey Ruzic. Ramirez picked up major decision victories in his first two bouts of the tournament, outscoring his opponents, 32-6. In his semifinal bout against No. 14 Farber, Ramirez went to overtime against his Big 12 foe, tied at one. Starting the period on top, Ramirez got a turn and three near-fall points to clinch the match and send him to the finals, where he handled Rinken, 8-2.
No. 9 Ryder went 3-0 on the day, outscoring his opponents 39-5. Ryder pinned Little Rock's Jake Stacey in his first bout and followed it with an uber-impressive first-period technical fall over Illinois' Joey Braunagel, 16-0. After a scoreless first period in the title bout, Ryder collected a pair of takedowns against Brown's Thomas Sandoval to claim the 184-pound title while not surrendering a takedown on the day.
No. 16 Facundo rolled to his 174-pound title in Edwardsville. The redshirt junior picked up technical fall wins in his first two bouts against Northern Iowa's Izzy Moreno and Missouri's Danny Heiser, respectively. Facundo also did not surrender a takedown on the day, while outscoring his opponents, 36-5, in just two matches due to Northern Iowa's Jared Simma medically forfeiting the title bout.
197-pounder Austin Johnson made his Cowboy debut on Sunday, nabbing the first two wins of his collegiate career and taking second place at the Cougar Classic. 149-pound teammate No. 13 Casey Swiderski also placed second, going 3-1 on the weekend with a pair of bonus-point wins.
Cowboys Gary Steen (125) Kody Routledge (165) and Trevor Dopps (197) all took home third place at the Cougar Clash. After dropping his opening bout to Trever Anderson, 2-0, Steen rallied off four consecutive wins to finish his weekend. Routledge tallied a 4-1 record on the weekend with a notable comeback win over SIUE's Brock Woodcock in sudden victory. After picking up a technical fall victory in his opening bout, Dopps dropped his quarterfinal bout to the eventual 197-pound champion, Andrew Reall. After the loss, Dopps picked up three straight wins in tightly-contested bouts to take third.
Sam Smith (133) and Kolter Burton (149) both finished fifth at the Cougar Classic in their first action this season. Smith went 3-2 on the day with a major decision victory over Missouri's Boogie Harris, while Burton posted a 4-2 record with a major decision over Brown's Eli Carr.
Ishmael Guerrero (165) and Benjamin Mower (HWT) took home sixth at the Clash. Guerrero opened his tournament with a pair of pins in the opening two rounds, before dropping to eventual 165-pound champion Ryder Downey, sending him to the backside of the bracket. After a loss to No. 9 Luke Luffman, Mower rebounded with a pair of wins on the backside and eventually took sixth. JJ McComas took home eighth in the 141-pound bracket, with his lone win of the day coming over Missouri's Jace Roller.
Cutter Sheets (157) was the lone Cowboy who won a match to fall short of placing. Sheets picked up a major decision victory in his opening bout, before losing to eventual champion Caleb Tyus and fifth-place finisher Donavon Allen.
No. 20 Richard Figueroa II (133), Rin Sakamoto (133) and Beau Hickman (149) all dropped both their bouts on the day.
The Cowboys return to dual action against No. 18 West Virginia on December 14 at 1 p.m. at Hope Coliseum in Morgantown, West Virginia.
